Well, add inanimate objects to the list of things that want me dead. My car just tried to kill me. Power steering cut out right before a fairly messy turn.

You've clearly never been driving a car when the power steering goes. It's nearly impossible to steer. It's nothing like an older car.

My first car had standard steering. The power steering pump went on my second car but was intermittent for a while. If I hadn't had a car with standard steering / driven race cars without power steering it would have thrown me too.

My last car had standard steering as well (89 Civic). The problem is twofold: 1) Steering is much harder than standard when the power steering motor cuts out. 2) Having it happen when you aren't expecting it right at a fairly sharp turn taken at speed.

Edit - There is also a recall on said motor for my car. Dealer still doesn't have parts to fix it though.
