I tought my fiance the basics of mtg last week, and have been playing against her getting her used to different decks and play styles.
now i havn't been to a standard game since tempest lol, so im not exactly deep in the scene these days, so im trying to find an easy intro game for here, and something to shake the rust off for me.
a nearby game store has FNM magic tonight, and its a booster draft.
i was wondering if you guys think that would be a good starting point for her, that wouldn't be a brutal overkill to both her deck and morale.
and also if it would be fair to the other players when dealing with someone who is a total beginner.

Drafting can be a little difficult, but if you're both open minded and willing to lose and have fun, then give it a try. Or keep playing together for a few more weeks and get more comfortable.

I definitely second Kaitscralt's suggestions, but if you find that's too demoralizing you can always try a Drafting Party at someone's house. They're very casual and lots of fun, even if you don't come primarily for the Magic.

well i dont know anybody locally here that plays mtg, so a casual draft is probably out of the question. and i lost my fair share of standard back in the day, so i dont really care. i think it would great experience for my girl and i.
i think im gonna email the shop and ask how beginner friendly they are lol

Unfortunately, haven't ever been there. The wife and I draft at Game Haven on 9000 South. They don't start until 10:00, so it's after the normal FNM. Typically, we hang out at Hastur's before that, but only because we made friends there that we don't want to lose. The owner is a total cockbag, and treats some of his employees, let alone customers like crap.

10pm? thats pretty good. most drafts were too early from what i'm seeing. 5pm just doesn't cut it

Yeah, we like it, especially since we never make it to "normal" FNM on time anyway, since we have to get the kids to my parents house, and they usually aren't even home from work by 5:00, unless my mother decided to work from home, or play hookey entirely...which she's known to do.
The crowd at Game Haven for drafts is, for the most part, pretty cool too. We've met some really great people there. Drafts are $12 per person, no rare-redrafting, and the prize split is 3-1. Oh, and they've got a house rule...if you open a pack with a foil mythic or foil shock, you're allowed to call the judge, and have them put that pack aside for you to purchase outright later, and they'll give you a new pack to draft with.

Totally. As long as she brings me home some boosters, I don't get so cranky about having to make my own food too.

She does. And I even listen to her complain about having to move around in those hella huge heels. At least, for a couple of minutes before I get bored.

”Yeah, I called her up. She gave me a bunch of crap about me not listening to her or something. I don’t know, I wasn’t really paying attention.”

They may not be open yet. I'm not sure on their hours, but I know Oasis Games (Downtown) doesn't even open until 2:00 PM.
Given the clientele...it makes sense not to open super early and waste costs on the 1-2 customers you may get early day.

oh yeah, that does make total sense lol
