Since it happened in my area, I've been following it on the news. This woman, Elizabeth Escalona, is 23 and has 5 kids. Last year, her youngest (2) was in a coma for 3 days because her mother beat her to within an inch of her life. Sometime during the torture, she super glued the baby's hands to the wall. I saw pictures, and skin was lost when they were removed from the walls. Last night on the news, they showed bits of her testimony, and the prosecutor asked her if she did those things to her baby because of anything the baby had done, and she said no. She's saying she had an abusive childhood and now has an abusive adulthood.
You guys know, these stories just kill me. I have 4 nephews who I practically helped raise the
first 3. Kids have infuriated the hell out of me, but I've never done anything like this. Most I've done is spank, and not with anything other than my hand. I just don't get it.

People can be so fucked up, this woman deserves to be locked up for the rest of her life (or executed, if that's your thing). I think being 23 and having 5 kids is one big leap into the wrong direction to start with..

This essentially.

Agreed. Though I'm going to work under the assumption that she's hardcore Catholic and, therefore, doesn't use birth control. I don't know if her children had different fathers or if all were fathered by the same man.
For whatever reason, Manasjap, the maximum punishment she can get is 45 years. That's not technically a life sentence, though if she survived, she'd be pretty damn old when she got out.
Minimum, which is appalling to me,
is probation. Probation? For torturing your own child?! I think not.

She needs mental help, I don't think the system of "Put them away forever/kill them" should be our first go-to when we do have so many professionals out there that could help.
Guess I'm just young and very new age.
But yes, this is horrible and I hope the kids are put in a better home.

The kids are already with their grandmother, her mother, who testified against her daughter. Well, this woman plead guilty, the "trial" is just for sentencing.
I, too, would rather this woman go into a psychiatric facility than a prison. If what she's saying is true, she never stood a chance to have a normal life, and she should get the help that she needs.

Being a dad, I am disgusted and would like to be left alone in a room with her for half an hour...
Or get her professional help, I guess that's the civilized thing to do.

I don't have any kids, and I believe that makes me know how you feel GR. (Also, I didn't know you were a dad!)
But, really, she's 23. She could still make something out of her life if she gets professional help.

23 years old and five kids... I thought Maine was bad with 30 year olds with kids ranging from 12-new born.
I'm on the fence about what should happen to her. I don't think prison and mental help is out of the question. Possibly a few year stint in prison (whatever your Texas Child Abuse laws are) and then a couple years in a mental rehab facility.
She should never be able to care for these children again though. See them? If they want to see her. Her take care of them? No way.
