Wow $10 a pack, what a bargain! This surely will help the pricing of modern, thanks Wizards!

So basically it's a 10$ lottery ticket for a chance of getting an Emanuel the Rapist magical card?

I think I'll pass.

To add a little more content: Even if the set is packed with post-Zendikar Modern staples and doesn't include any duds at the rare/mythic level (unlikely to happen), 10$ is still too steep to consider for a pack of 15 cards, its almost the price for a decent meal for Christ sake. The fact that a booster pack has a two-digits value will possibly be a deterrent for many. I know it will for me.

To be fair, this set could have Jace, Stoneforge and all kinds of fetches.

oh wait no it can't because those cards are banned

You can get a fetches lottery ticket for about 1/3 the price of the Emanuel lottery ticket

its obvious to me that the change goes from completely awful to a little bit worse and I don't think even Wizards apologists would disagree.

Glaring omissions:
[cards]Goblin Guide
Serum Visions/Sleight of Hand
Inquisition of Kozilek
Batterskull
Linvala
Gitaxian Probe
Master of Etherium
Steel Overseer
Vault Skirge/Memnite/Signal Pest
Terminate
Blade Splicer
Aven Mindcensor
Kor Firewalker
Living End/the Balance equivalent
Wurmcoil Engine (though you can argue the Commander reprint is enough)
Condescend
The Urzatron
Valakut
Scapeshift
Honor of the Pure
Coralhelm Commander/Silvergill Adept/Merrow Reejerey
Gaddock Teeg
the Infect mechanic[/cards]

Some of these cards I can understand omitting (after all, how can you fit both Long Forgotten Gohei and Valakut into the same set? You just can't), but some of the $5+ COMMON staples of Modern being excluded, especially when a number of these cards have had multiple reprints versus the 0 non-foil-promo reprints for a number of these (Dismember vs Gitaxian Probe and Serum Visions) just seems like a logical chasm.

And it's not like these cards are $5 because they're cross-format staples that have only been printed once -- Serum Visions literally saw 0 play in Standard while it was legal, but is one of 3 real card selection cards in Modern at 1 mana, and with specific flavor ties to Mirrodin the card doesn't seem likely to show up in Battle for Zendikar (which at least Linvala, Inquisition, Guide, etc have some reasonable chance of a second printing in Fall).

I am glad I chose not to buy into this set, but I feel bad for new players who need to try to leverage this set to get into Modern and get a bunch of Battlegrace Angels and Sickle Slicers for their trouble.

We had room for another round of Frogmites and Myr Enforcers that literally no one plays, and we just reprinted Darksteel Citadel, but we couldn't put in actual cards people play in Affinity that most people don't have access to.

We had room for Mortarpod and Flayer Husk, but representing the mechanic with Batterskull was deemed unnecessary by R&D.

This is a fairly detailed article about the lack of EV of MM2, which is more of less in line with the gut feeling I had.

So happy I'm skipping these, its funny that no one even bothered posting the spoilers in our news section

3 paragraph summary:
"This means that 20 percent of the time you'll open something sweet, 10 percent of the time you'll open something middling, and 70 percent of the time you'll open a rare worth $2 or less. For every Noble Hierarch you'll open four Long-Forgotten Gohei. Compare this to the original Modern Masters, which had 17 rares in the "more than a pack" catergory (32 percent), another 14 in the $3 through $5 range (26 percent), and about 40 percent in the bulk range. This is a stark and significant difference.

And this is not to mention the high number of literal bulk rares. In researching this article I stumbled across the fact that Modern Masters 2015, a set that has a MSRP of $10 per pack (2.5 times the cost of a "regular" pack), has more bulk rares than Dragons of Tarkir. And it was only a couple months back I was writing about how DTK had an absurdly low EV during the prerelease period.

Think about that for a minute. Modern Masters 2015 has more bulk rares than a set that had the worst presale EV since Dragon's Maze."
