This is a clever addition to the newest core set.

Slivers are always welcome but updating them to look not like slivers is lame.

I mean, they had something that was pretty much unique which wasn't some rip-off of someone else mythos, but now they are feeling the need to turn them into some bland monster.
Also the thing about it just affecting your dudes is just lazy design ala hexproof, these days it just seems people are so self-entitled that wotc feels the need to make mechanics with no possible drawbacks least people gonna rage. I love stuff like playing against slivers and sideboarding a plague sliver as anti-sliver tech. Or that time when those kids sweeped some tournament with a poison sliver deck back in time spiral block.
I'm sure newfags will love the new take though, but I really think its a damn shame that they felt the need to bastardize the flavor and mechanics.

The "you control" thing just had to be done unless they were going to reprint a shitload of slivers; there's only so many times you can roll out the same thing without changing the core mechanic at all. If they wanted to keep printing new slivers, something had to change.

they jumped the shark with that slivers premium deck, so it's not really like they can possibly fail any worse at this point, even if it means rebooting slivers as human-form michael bay's transformers.

human-form michael bay's transformers.
thats a perfectly accurate description of what these duds look like.

i liked the transformers movies though. if they referenced the old style silvers via flavor text that would be cool

Oh cool new sliv....wtf? Why do they look like this? These are not the slivers that existed.

THESE THINGS FUCKING EVOLVE.
How is that so hard to figure out.

checkbox, i know this is difficult to grasp, but there's a general "character style sheet" that accompanies the various races of magic -- goblins are little earth-toned dudes with big noses that tend to be wiry, elves a slender pale guys and very tall, humans look like fucking humans, cats look like cats. it's all pretty cut-and-dry, if a creature is X race, it looks generally like X. now what if humans in the next set all had 6 legs, goat horns, 5 eyes, and had the face of a fly? and that's all they were, not like it was some exception like insectile aberration, where there's a flavorful reason why this specific human looks different from the rest (he's jeff goldblum, duh). there's a stylized specific creature and characteristics that make slivers slivers, and while there are vague nods to those established characteristics, all of these new slivers break established convention.. it's not just a single one-off
stylistic thing like the simic maze runner, experiment one, or insectile aberration, it's the whole race as spoiled thus far. it's not something that actually matters in any tangible way, but it also doesn't make a whole lot of sense from a style perspective in a game that has an overwhelming segment of it dedicated to style.

Checkbox, not every creature in the magic lore needs to be bipedal with opposable thumbs.
Yeah slivers evolved, but they evolved into a lazy generic design and that is all, its not like people are going to quit mtg over this, but its just sad that they took out what was one of the few unique designs that MTG is responsible for, replacing it by some visual garbage that you could find in any low-budget sci-fi rip-off of aliens/predator/whatever

I'm not saying I'm happy about it, but it's not completely out of flavor for this sort of thing to happen.
And like I said (and like he said in the article), there's only so many variations you can do/use with the "traditional" sliver looks (and mechanics) before you have to change something. The alternative was no new slivers, because they needed to create new design and artistic space somewhere, so I'll take this alternative.

While I'm not raging at the change of the Slivers, I can think of 5+ ways of making them more like the old ones (in regard to the art, mind you).
