I mean, that happened with Koth all the time; the card pool needs to help you protect them.

I was t meant to write "better than Koth" if you're behind; which she is. Much better.

Why you wouldn't play 4 Hellrider before 1 Chandra I'm unsure. My notes were for post rotation.

So, I tried this last night when a friend came over to play. It's an experiment more than anything else. I wanted to try out the Avengers, so, of course, I never got to see any in action. The mana was surprisingly consistent, though I kept drawing multiple Shrines. Charm is absurdly good, and I want to put Legion Loyalist in there.

Is it any good? <<shakes Magic 8 ball>> It is doubtful. Was it fun to try? Yes.

Took this list to FNM and went 3-1 with it. I basically copied Melissa DeTora's RDW deck and swapped the birds out for the doggies.

[DECK]
CREATURES (31)
4x Stromkirk Noble
4x Rakdos Cackler
4x Ash Zealot
4x Burning-Tree Emissary
4x Lightning Mauler
3x Firefist Striker
4x Pyreheart Wolf
4x Hellrider

BURN (7)
3x Pillar of Flame
4x Searing Spear

LAND (22)
4x Mutavault
18x Mountain

SIDEBOARD
3x Burning Earth
3x Skullcrack
3x Mizzium Mortars
2x Traitorous Blood
4x Volcanic Strength
[/deck]

Overall the deck played out beautifully. The sideboarding was really easy and I used everything throughout FNM.

My only loss was to my brother's Esper list (1-2) and it was a really close match. The two losses were due to mulls to 5 and the fact that I was unable to stick a Burning Earth. Overall, I 2-0'd all my matches, beating Gruul Sligh, Dega Midrange featuring Archangel of Thune (the whole time I kept
saying, "Thuuuuune. Thuuuuuune," in my best creepy Mike Tyson voice.), and a U/B mill deck (T-Blood your monstrous Consuming Aberration? Yes, please! ).

I was also completely impressed with Firefist Striker. It was also funny to just keep repeating "Striker, striker, striker" like in Airplane. Man, I love that movie.

Also obtained my 5th Cackler. Fuck yeah.

Still undecided on if I'd rather play Phoenix or Wolf. Though, I can't deny the awesomeness of the "can't block /won't block" play on the Hellrider swing with Strikers and Wolves.

That mana base makes me feel unwell.
I know. It's horrible. Like I mentioned, highly experimental. I wanted to try something new.

I suppose you could purge the profane thoughts or feelings. That might help.

Fate, there's nothing more delightfully disgusting than to land a Wolf and Hellrider, activate a couple of Mutavaults, and then swing for a million at your helpless opponent.

It's a beautiful thing.

yeah there's no way that a 2/2 flier than you can sometimes (with 7-10 burn spells) get back is better than a ALL 26 of my other creatures are slamming into yo face SON with undying.

I just can't see it.

your list above doesnt have any phoenixes (Z's list)

What list were you testing phoenix in? She just seems more narrow than wolf, who is better with more of your cards (as khaos described, disgustingly better) whereas phoenix is just an ok beater with recursion depending on how many burn spells you're running (and it doesn;t matter how often you recur it if it just runs into lingering souls tokens/resto angels and shit again and again). Just seems only good against pure control lists in a grindier game, and wolf will grind better with your other cards (mutavault especially)

Phoenix is still good. In fact, I've had to ask myself in some of the games if I would've won any faster with it, but in testing and in my FNM games, there were games that would've been downright unwinnable without the wolf.

nWith that said, I am considering a 3/3 split on both awesome 3 drops.

yeah I just did some testing and I had a 3/2 split of wolf/phoenix. Having multiples of wolf is still meh while multiples of phoenix is pretty nice. 3/3 would work too but I don't know what 2 cards I'd cut for them.

I was running some mirror matches and man, it was nice having a shit ton of creatures. 35 creatures if you count the mutavaults, I was swinging for like 14 and between striker and wolf only 1 thing could be blocked (against a reckoner reckoner/ bte noble defense).

I think Mono Red is stronger, or at least it has more play. Like Kincey was saying, Gruul gets some REALLY awkward hands (because GCR isnt an early dude, so between spear pillar GCR and hellrider you get a ton of unplayable hands especialyl if youre going the madcap route)

Vs. Jund which seems to be all the rage in this 3 color format, its better just to be as threat dense as possible (and pyreheart wofl is more resillient than reckoner usually)
I think Muta Red has much more game.

Mono R has a shit ton of early threat density, which is key as fuck for aggro, and mutavault is just so worth it.

The only thing thats different is if you replace ash zealot with loyalist you have Z's list pretty much (with wolves instead of shortcutters I think). Ash Zealot is a bit more universally better vs. a wider range of decks?

Fuck this means if I want to play GCR is Naya Blitz is the best way to go. Maybe I'll just go back to my "fuck it 35 creature" Gruul Zoo with no pillars just spears.

Seems to me like any deck playing 4 Lightning Maulers has infinite lines of play with Pyreheart Wolf, where Chandra's Phoenix remains individually good without Lightning Mauler but openly unexciting with them.

That being said, I don't think I would play any Chandra's Phoenix right now because homeboy LM is still around, but that's just me. Just based on the card pool, Phoenix isn't as exciting as it used to be. I tend to just not like the card is much in the creature-centric decks of today. It was an amazing beater in the deck back when it was a true sligh deck because Shock got pointed at the head regularly, but it's really just an aggro deck now and a 2/2 flyer for 3 in a deck like that isn't as good as making all of your troops simply get in there.

Activate mutavault, soulbound LM to it, EoT you get an unbound LM?

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit big game.

Ninja: Lol. Yeah home boy is going to town. I can see why that guy was willing to trade me a Domri for 2 LMs now >___> (short sighted Gruul player, can respect).

Phoenix isnt' that bad, I was understimating it. Its still evasion in red? Its jsut horrible on defense and with no reckoner you need to be racing reallllly hard on offense so I think wolf is usually better.

One thing I know for sure : the Dega-Archangel of Thune deck with tons of Nighthawks and lifegain deck I played against would've stomped me had I not been packing Wolf and Strikers. Phoenixes would've been pathetic.

I played the shit outta Phoenix last season as well as in Modern. We were forced, I feel, to play with the bird last year for lack of better options. Nowadays, we have so many routes to take and, oddly enough, it all hinges on our 3-drops. Different decks use Reckoners, some use Wolf, and some decks live and die by the lack of a 3 drop, such as AIR. Phoenix, without a doubt, is good card but depending on what route you want to take, a different choice may be better.

I'm on MTGO today. M14 isn't released yet so it's trusty Dos Rakis for now.

Game 2 was a breeze because I drew more than 2 creatures. Game 3 was disappointing as I drew into land and my sideboarded Rakdos's Returns.

BTW, I posted this in the brewery a couple weeks ago and I didn't get any reply. This was my take on a YPDW deck.

[deck]
4 Legion Loyalist
4 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Ash Zealot
4 Chandra's Phoenix
3 Hellrider
4 Shock
4 Pillar of Flame
4 Searing Spear
4 Dynacharge
1 Brimstone Volley

18 Mountains
2 Mutavault
[/deck]

-Foundry Street Denizen plus Young Pyromancer seems like a real nice synergy, and we all know how awesome dynacharge/hellrider is with tokens. I have yet to sleeve this up in favor of a more midrange approach to the meta right now, so its just a theory deck.
- Definitely up for debate as to whether we want Pyreheart in this deck too until it rotates out, or beating with a hasty flier is more our perrogative. I dont think I could even begin to think about reckoner with the manabase as it.

Rakdos return is just so underwhelming. Did you show him the return's or just concede out of embarrasment that you had them in your sideboard. I think the latter is appropriate.

I stripped his hand but he top-decked a Blood Baron.

It wasn't the Rakdos's Return that lost me the game, it was the 7 land by turn 7.

Drew Levin is 5-1 at SCG Richmond with AIR feat Mutavault and Hellrider, with land and Burning Earth in the board aka he is a net decking fiend!

Feels good to be that far ahead.

[deck]RDW 5th in latest SCG I think[/deck]

I actually like this list, and I realize the need for Skullcrack right now due to the abundance of Bant Hexproof.
