I think the real discussion point really should be "Why is Ogre Battledriver only three bucks?"

That card is the literal nuts.

Howdy all! Hope everyone had a loverly weekend.
Suga keeps trying to knock Alex off his vaguely phallic-shaped pedestal.
Actually, it's more of a type of chair...
Happy birthday Kait!
You're gonna have to travel to Speak Your Mind for that one.
Nah, that mother fucker's in here all the time - he just keeps his account hidden.

Find me a deck that wants to play it maindeck right now (since we cannot speculate on Theros standard) and don't say GW or we will revisit how terrible that deck is again!
New decks might come up. After playing it this weekend, I can testify to it's power level. Brad Nelson has also been saying it's the most powerful card in the set and the most likely to make an impact on Standard. I am not thinking ahead to Theros yet. I'm concerned with M14 standard.

Incorrect statement is incorrect. It will be our new Hellrider in a few months and it makes AIR a much better archetype. Also quite good in Sledgehammer builds. (Five drops that were previously only "meh" without Haste? NP.) It's good for basically all of the same
reasons that Hero of Oxid Ridge was good.

Battledriver makes 1 and 2 drops much better late game topdecks. Cacklers get to be 4/2 hasty guys? Yes, please. Reckoner comes in as a 5/3 haste dude.

If you could pull it off, Young Pyromancer + Ogre Battledriver + Krenko's Command = 3, 3/1 hasty dudes hitting the field.

Lots of upside to Battledriver.

REALLY enjoying the Dega Midrange list discussion of late in the MTGSally competitive established area. Kamahl's own primer is crumbling in on him, and people are calling him out in his own thread. Maybe there's hope yet?

I played a few rounds of Modern in the MTGO practice room this morning, and my proudest moment was winning against a mono-white lifegain deck with Modern Dos Rakis

At one point he had 3 Wall of Reverence and 3 Auriok Champions on the battlefield, then he drew into a pair of Kitchen Finks.

I think I ended up dealing roughly 90 damage before I killed all of his creatures with pumped up Figures of Destiny and my MVP Grim Lavamancer.

That's a link to a guy doing a very good job of tearing down
Kamahl's arguments. He's the one I mean when I say maybe there's hope - at least based on this one post.

I believe Kamahl is someone Redthirst has run into in the R/x subforums.

I think you're gonna have to revisit it, Zeman. I'm with Kincey (though we're thinking abotu different decks, the main ideas of FS/DS, Unflinching courage, and sublime archangel remain):

[deck]4 Arbor Elf
4 Voice of Resurgence
2 Strangleroot Geist
4 Loxodon Smiter
4 Silverblade Paladin
4 Sublime Archangel
4 Advent of the Wurm
2 Wolfir Silverheart
4 Avacyn's Pilgrim

3 Faith's Shield
3 Rancor

4 Temple Garden
4 Sunpetal Grove
8 Forest
6 Plains

//Sideboard
SB: 3 Garruk Relentless
SB: 3 Triumph of Ferocity
SB: 3 Gift of Orzhova
SB: 2 Oblivion Ring
SB: 1 Fiend Hunter
SB: 2 Grafdigger's Cage
SB: 1 Garruk, Primal Hunter
[/deck]

Tell me how this is a bad deck. Its by Nakamura from a few weeks ago, and playtesting it back then it didn't really have any rough match-ups and the power level of these cards was absurd. Gift of Orzhova over Unflinching is an odd choice, but he swore that flying
elephants is more relevant than trampling ones with extra toughness

Given the option of MMA draft and any other magic event, unless I think I can make more then 80 bucks cash in the other event, I'm MMA drafting. It's TOO FUN.

Reading yobo's last post I can imagine having this conversation with khamal in a world where we're all rappers:

"Damn nigga, he killed you on your own shit!!!"

R/G midrange. Ogre battle driver, arbor elf, elvish mystic, kalonia hydra/wolfir silverheart, bonfire, gyre sage, burning-tree emissary, scavenging ooze. There's a deck there and it's good.

Has that really been your profit margin on MMA drafts? I've been breaking even more often than not, and that's WITH prize support. The market saturation is most certainly starting to come into play just like we figured it would.

Know, not at all. But I value playing the set a lot because it's amazing and the most fun I've ever had playing magic. The most I ever made was Vegas where I opened Clique, foil aether vial, foil spell snare, and something else.

What other non-land, non-creature spells would you run, and what are your thoughts on Ruric Thar in there? I've been thinking along similar lines.

Just brainstorming. The thought of having turn three batteldriver, turn four 5-drops swinging for 10 is kind of hot. Thundermaw is certainly a worthy candidate and it's possible you want huntmaster since they again have synergy with batteldriver and give you a solid 4 drop that's good across the board.

There's a non-zero chance this is a domri deck since you would be relatively light on removal, and playing anything with batteldriver on board makes your guys big enough to brawl, but I'm doubting that's correct.

While I don't think Hydra is worth the hype, I think it's a great card as it makes so many things better while being fine on it's own and it makes up for one of silverhearts biggest weakness; built in trample.

That's my thought as well. I have no experience with Modern archetypes so I'll be at a slight disadvantage but I've always enjoyed drafting and I hear MMA is the best draft set ever.

you can't run 8 dorks in the same list with gyre sage, from experience with the R/g midrange deck.

Its way too many do nothing cards.

Hmmm but I do like the way of thinking here with battle driver. Especially once Mono Red gets seduced over to splashing white and black once Flinthoof rotates.... Gruul's gonna have to go bigger for sure. I wonder if its good enough to start seeing play asap over hellrider in that list?

*brew time*

If we simply replace hellrider and silverheart (the former possible being a retarded choice?):

[deck]
30
Creatures
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Flinthoof Boar
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager
4 Arbor Elf
2 Borderland Ranger
4 Ogre Battledriver
4 Gyre Sage
2 Thundermaw Hellkite
2 Kalonian Hydra

23 Lands
7 Forest
4 Rootbound Crag
4 Stomping Ground
7 Mountain
1 Kessig Wolf Run

7 Spells
4 Domri Rade
3 Bonfire of the Damned

//Sideboard
SB: 3 Pillar of Flame
SB: 2 Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
SB: 1 Kessig Wolf Run
SB: 4 Volcanic Strength
SB: 2 Zealous Conscripts
SB: 1 Garruk Relentless
SB: 2 Mizzium Mortars[/deck]

Arbor Elf over Mystic because Arbor Elf can make double red off stomping which is important.

The thought of Hasting out a 8/6 Ruric Thar makes me pretty happy. Even if Burning Earth is probably better given how many basics this runs.
And of course the nut hasted kalonian hydra to make your gyre sage a 8/9....

That's my thought as well. I have no experience with Modern archetypes so I'll be at a slight disadvantage but I've always enjoyed drafting and I hear MMA is the best draft set ever.
Best archetypes IMO are 5 color green and B/W rebels. Keys to each archetype are kodama's reach and...rebels with rebel searchers.

Personally, I'm a fan of rebels. You ideally want 3 or more rebel
searchers(blightspeaker, amrou scout), along with a couple saltfield recluse, a rathi trapper or two, and some number of all the other cheap rebels. Bound in silence is a high pick for everyone so your unlikely to get multiples, but that along with avian changeling are big draws to archetype as tutoring for wind drakes and pacifisms is extremely powerful. After my second time drafting the deck, I learned why Owen turtenwald said he prefers playing 18 lands in his rebel decks. Even though you have some aggressive draws, you really excel in the long game, and having 2 scouts out with 8 mana lets you generate a lot of card advantage and board presence simultaneously.

The Domain green deck on the other hand just needs good mana fixing and then you start drafting the best card in every pack. The average cmc of the deck is usually around 5 as your 1 and 2 drop slot is usually going to be dedicated to suspend spells and the expensive basic land cyclers. Erratic mutation is premium removal in this deck as the
only cards that generally will cost less then 3 will be the mutations themselves and Kodama's reach/search for tomorrow. IF you can get 3/4 of the latter two cards and a couple vivid's/terramorphics, I'd go all in on the domain deck. Tromp the domains also wins games for those not in the know.

There are tons of other archetypes that are good as well and if you draft a decent amount, you should be able to pick up on the signals. UW no archetype is a strong deck, R/W giants is ok, if clunky, UB faeries, Esper artifacts/affinity, W/r rebels isn't bad, Rakdos goblins is good and amazing if you have multiple mad aunites, etc.

The biggest advice I can give though is don't be afraid to switch archetypes come p1/p8 if you see something that's super open. The set is so deep that you often have 30+ playables come building time. I usually start hate drafting/picking up sideboard cards in the middle of pack 3 myself.

If it's still shaky you definitely have a bad o2 sensor. Replacing them is relatively inexpensive.

LP - thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can make some plans to go Friday and do some mock drafts in anticipation.
