When I go to a bar I expect the bar to have all the stuff I don't keep around, and I really don't think an oldfashioned or a proper martini are so far out of the realm of what people order. A week ago I go into a new bar that had just opened up near work and ordered an oldfashioned. It came out the right color (though some of the sugar was not completely dissolved), and with the right garnish (a cherry and orange wheel), but it tasted aweful. I asked what kind of bitters they were using and they said "we don't have bitters". To which I replied "why didn't you tell me that when I ordered this?". They came back with "we didn't think it mattered". Needless to say I will not be going back.

I don't much care that pbr is the "hipster beer", it's the least aweful of the dirt cheap beers. If you haven't had it, good for you, you either haven't been broke, or you're not a borderline alcoholic (or some of column a some of column b).

Here in Aus, cheap beer is aussie beer and imported is more. Still, I'd rather get peroni for $48 a case instead of VB or XXXX for $40

There's varying levels of cheap. When it comes to the bottom "shit tier" non-malt liquor beers in the US the only one that's drinkable (and that's being generous) is pbr (never drink natty lite, unless you like watered down horse piss). If I have the money it's craft beers or higher end whiskey all the the way, but I don't, because I play M:tG (i'm saving up for chandras because i'm probably going to switch from devo-red to pyrored).

I don't drink much anyway, but if I do its scotch, beer or cider

+1 for Peroni. You can get Kirin or Asahi cheap too.

I'm definitely not a lager person (see above posts...what passes for "beer" here makes my head want to explode), but I could be content with Asahi as a casual beverage. Needless to say, Asahi, Kirin and Peroni all demand craft-brew prices here.
