But seriously that's a great question, although impossible to answer in any way since time was born with the big bang itself.

Though the anthropic principle just answers that it doesn't matter since if there was nothing, there wouldn't be anyone capable of questioning why there is nothing instead of anything, therefore the question is superfluous. There is something and that's what we're at it.

The anthropic principle is just a philosopher's way of saying philosophy is meaningless, which it is, but you don't need philosophy to tell you that.

To answer your question though, Blackhound, our best guess is that the universe is just one side of a spontaneous quantum creation. It's similar to how positrons and electrons are being created and destroyed before your eyes right this second, just on a much larger scale.
