4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Boros Charm
4 Searing Blaze
2 Skullcrack
2 Lightning Helix

Land 19

4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
1 Stomping Ground
3 Sacred Foundry
3 Mountain

Sideboard
3 Destructive Revelry

[/deck]

Scapehsift: 2-0

Deck may still need some tweaks in the board.

Molten Rain?

Molten Rain?
Nope. It really isn't that good against Amulet and it's really only good against Junk on the play.

Also, this may shut the anti-KFW camp up:

Image

Would not have won this game just now if it weren't for my little anti-fire bear.

Note: I lost game 2 because I fucked up and grabbed a Mountain over a Foundry when I wanted to play my KFW. One misclicked cost me that game because he dropped his own after that turn. I had to scoop and start a game 3 and drew into a KFW on my first draw. I won when I could play a double Charm. :flame:

I think this is where I am after the last few rounds of testing:

[deck]Burn[/deck]

I don't understand Stony Silence, Grafdigger's Cage, or Torpor Orb in your sideboard. Your mana base also looks very painful and puts you way behind in a mirror.

by BlakLanner
Mana base is no more painful than anyone else's, really. I have the 4th shockland for extra white mana but it is stock otherwise (10 fetches, 4 basics). Stony Silence is to fight Affinity and Tron, which still has a following here. Molten Rain is useful against Tron but not many other opponents. Cage is because there are Storm and Living End players in my area. Torpor Orb is for Twin and Junk.

"Stony Silence is for Affinity and Tron"

To do what, exactly? You're a Burn deck. Just go kill them.

Rest in Peace seems better against Storm and Living End.

You already have Revelry for Twin, and running a Torpor Orb into a deck running Abrupt Decay seems pretty bad.

Stop trying to be cute and run spells that actually do damage.

tl;dr you hedge too much.

You need stuff like Stony Silence if you're playing a creature deck like Baby Boros or BBBSG, but Burn can just merrily chew through the opponent's life total while they struggle to gain life or put down a faster clock.

Eidolon is the card that kills Storm.

Cage doesn't do anything against Living End, creatures enter from Exile, not from the Graveyard. Does it do anything against Storm? If you've spent a card doing nothing, you've just given them time to get Ascension online. Orb doesn't stop Twin or Junk killing you, you have to kill them faster. Orb would have to counter 2 Rhino ETB's before it is better than a 3 point burn spell. Isn't Smash to Smithereens better than Stony Silence?

by BlakLanner
You are correct about Living End, I misread the card. Cage stops Past in Flames nonsense in Storm but that alone might not be worth the sideboard slot. Orb stops the actual combo in Twin. The Junk players still play Finks, so it is more than just Rhino that I want to stop. Stony Silence shuts off a lot of Affinity's mana, Arcbound Ravager, and Cranial Plating. The Revelries also come in as well, obviously.

Just Burn them out. There's too many cards that don't deal damage.

Don't control the game. End it.

Stony silence is fine, but in burn, you can probably do better vs. affinity.

So I'm going to a Modern Trial (for a local bigger Modern tournament in March) this Saturday. Unfortunately, I'll only have access to 4-5 red fetches. I'm getting more, but I won't have time for it before Saturday. Am I totally crazy for considering running 2-3 Windswept Heaths to help with getting those Sacred Foundries and Stomping Grounds on the table?

It's pushing it. Try Battlefield Forge.

I only suggest this because the manabase of the deck that won GP Kobe over the summer looked like this:

[deck]
4 Arid Mesa
4 Battlefield Forge
4 Sacred Foundry
8 Mountain
[/deck]

Yes, Battlefield Forges are an option, at least if I go with no Destructive Revelies. It's basically the single Stomping Ground that's causing trouble. Perhaps it's better to put Wear // Tear in the SB instead of Destructive Revelry for now.

Which is why I said "worst case," although I did have one rare circumstance come up in testing. It was burn mirror, the board was clear, and both of us were top decking. I was at 2, he was at 3. I top decked the Spellbomb. If I did 2 to the face he'd be at 1 and I'd pass turn. Instead I drew a Skullcrack off it and won rather than letting him get a draw step and kill me with any number of cards.

3 Eidolon is a sin.

No wonder PV hates Modern. His Burn decks suck.

It felt like it was written by a player who never plays burn normally. Which it probably was. Splashing blue for Geist of Saint Traft is just too cute. But I must say that 1-2 Mutagenic Growth might be ok. Then again, taking two (or four) to save Guide or Eidolon...is it really worth it?

I loved my Geists in the Cruise days so I can see where he was coming from. It definitely came off as someone who didn't like the deck and wasn't exactly sure how it was to be done.

It was a bad version of Shahars lists.

You also had a more important blue splash then, so you might as well add a couple of Geist in the SB. Different deck and makes more sense in that one.

I thought his commentary on the strategy was fine, but you could tell writing about the deck was the last thing he wanted to do. He had a pretty condescending tone throughout the article.

It's like Armageddon. The format isn't bad. It's not even piss poor. It's fucking terrible.

You rarely play a game of magic with someone so much as try to goldfish past each other and the sideboard cards are too overpowered. I'm close to the Legacy>Modern wagon, but I hate legacy. Having said that, with the void that pod and cruise left, the formats pretty miserable now. Only something like 3/4 of the top 12 decks are things you can reasonably interact with which sucks.

I can only see myself playing infect or bloom if I bothered to play an event because they can kill you on turn 3.

/end rant.

Burn being a tier 1 deck as opposed to niche tier 1.5 in an eternal format is abhorrent to me.

I definitely like Legacy more than Modern. Modern feels like a slightly slower version of what would happen if Legacy didn't have safety valves like Force of Will. Everything is "draw your sideboard card or die".
