I can't see ebay from here, but Firemane is up to ~$1.50 on Amazon. $2 on SCG. If you can still grab at $1, do it.

There is a 'modern' version of the this archetype with Experiment One, trying to run BTE into Kird Ape or Tarmo or Boar for the turn 2 3/3 etc;
Something like this:

[deck]Lands (19)
4 Copperline Gorge
4 Stomping Ground
3 Scalding Tarn
2 Verdant Catacombs
1 Arid Mesa
2 Forest
3 Mountain

Creatures (28)
4 Kird Ape
4 Experiment One
4 Goblin Guide
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Stormblood Berserker
4 Flinthoof Boar
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager

Spells (13)
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Rancor
2 Dismember
3 Searing Blaze
[/deck]

Swap Stormbloods for Tarmogoyfs when possible.

May or may not take time to right some magic theory. I've been organizing my thoughts about things since I'm about to start "tutoring" my teammates/buddies on what high level magic is about. Mostly a breakdown of archetypes, pillars of formats, proper deckbuilding/metagaming strategies and the like. FWIW, the pillars of the format are Thragtusk, BTE, and Sphinx's revelation. If you aren't playing one of those three cards in your deck, you need a damn good reason for it. Cartel/falkenrath aristocrat/experiment one/reckoner are on the VERY short list of cards that validate other strategies and most of them play fine along side the other 3.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Got bored, wandered over to Sally, ran onto typical Kamahl bullshit here, couldn't leave it alone. Why do people feel the need to post such trash? Does anyone really feel like a better person by posting that they're getting a better in than someone else when it's obviously fictitious? Or am I just the only ignoramus who doesn't know about all the wonderful, selfless card shops that can afford to sell off MM in bulk at discounted prices?

@zeman - I saw the version of that list with AoS; I'm intrigued with your subs of Olivia and BAct; using Rites to set up a combo rather than cheat things in has some appeal.

Yeah, I am probably trying to be too cute, but I think the deck would be a lot of fun to play (also, better mana when you don't need to make WWW).

Sup Redbros,

Was hoping I could lean on you guys for help. I'm playing in a PTQ on Sunday, and I need opinions on my sideboarding plan.

I intend to play this:

[deck]Ghost Musters
Johnny_Spike
PTQ Theros Deck for 06/02/2013
Standard

Land (25)
4 Blood Crypt
4 Godless Shrine
3 Sacred Foundry
4 Isolated Chapel
4 Dragonskull Summit
1 Cavern of Souls
3 Clifftop Retreat
1 Mountain
1 Vault of the Archangel

Creatures (11)
4 Boros Reckoner
3 Olivia Voldaren
2 Obzedat, Ghost Council
2 Aurelia, The Watleader

Spells (24)
3 Pillar of Flame
3 Dreadbore
3 Mizzium Mortars
1 Rakdos's Return
4 Lingering Souls
2 Rakdos Keyrune
3 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
3 Warleader's Helix
2 Assemble the Legion

Sideboard (15)
2 Blood Baron of Vitzkopa
3 Slaughter Games
2 Merciless Eviction
3 Barter in Blood
2 Oblivion Ring
2 Purify the Grave
1 Pillar of Flame[/deck]

I've tweaked a few things, but for the
most part this is based on a few 4-0 Modo Lists and a premier event 3rd place list. I am scratching my head a little as to when Merciless Eviction is meant to come in. What decks is it good against? Random enchantment decks like pillow fort, exhausting possibilities etc?

Here's my sideboard plan (any advice appreciated):

VS Gruul / RDW / Blitz
-1 [card]Rakdos's Return[/card], -4 Lingering Souls(because the have ways to deal with Souls tokens) +3 Barter in Blood, +2 Oblivion Ring

VS Jund / Mirror
-3 Pillar of Flame (only hits douchemaster), -3 Mizium Mortars (doesn't seem that good to me vs their creature base, I could be wrong), +3 Slaughter Games (going for tusk / Olivia), +2 [card]Blood Baron of
Vitzkopa[/card] (because they only have Mizzium Mortars / Miracle Bonfire as answers) +1 Oblivion Ring

VS Reanimator (Junk Rites or Four Colour)
-3 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, -3 Mizzium Mortars (Seems meh vs their creature base), +2 Purify the Grave, +3 Slaughter Games, +1 Pillar of Flame (Going for Voice / Dorks)

VS UWR
-4 Lingering Souls (they bring in Staticaster / Thundermaw), - 3 Pillar of Flame (only hits Snapcaster) +3 Slaughter Games (usually Rev), +2 Blood Baron of Vitzkopa (correct me it I'm wrong, but I don't think they can interact with him at all), +2 Oblivion Ring (for enchantments mostly)

VS Bant Hexproof
-3 [card]
Mizzium Mortars[/card], -3 Dreadbore, -3 Olivia Voldaren, (These three seem like they won't have tasrgets) -1 Rakdos's Return, (they dump their hand quickly) +3 Barter in Blood (Just get em, hopefully), +1 Pillar of Flame(for dorks), +2 Oblivion Ring(For non-hexproof guy / Cloak), +2 Merciless Eviction (if things are hairy Turn 5 / 6, maybe too slow?)

VS Aristocrats
-3 Mizzium Mortars (seems bad vs their creature base), +2 Oblivion Ring, +1 Pillar of Flame (Doomed Traveller / Blood Artist)

EDIT: Happy Birthday Platypus!

Happy birthday Platypus!

Re: Firemane Avenger. I picked up 8 on MTGO since they were ridiculously cheap. She will be a pillar of the format after rotation. I only have one copy in paper and will probably try to grab 7 more in anticipation of a huge price increase.

If you're looking for other good investments, check out Exava. She's basically going to fill the slot opened when Falkenrath Aristocrat rotates, and since she has 4 ass and first strike she's arguably just as good if not better, especially in a slowing format.

I'm thinking Legion Loyalist's value is going to go up over time as well. Loyalist + Battledriver will be quite potent together.

Legion loyalist is a build around ~ 1/1 first strike / trample is unexciting, but with global boosts you can do some gross things. Will need to wait and see what toys we have.

Happy Birthday, Platy!

Catching up on a few things in the main thread here - I've been posting over in a couple standard threads recently.

I like Firemane Avenger a LOT. I'm lucky to have opened 3 of the regular art and I got a game day promo version from... game day. It's a beautiful card and I can't wait for its potential to be realized.

RE: MM boxes. You can find a deal here and there. Do I believe Kamahl got a deal? Probably not. But that's the price a buddy got for 2 boxes. He grew up on Cape Cod and the LGS there said they'd sell a max of 2 boxes per customer to a limited number of customers and only locals/regulars. $160 each. So it's not probable but it's also not impossible.

Thanks for the promotion! :)

Hooray promotions!

Loyalist: I bet he holds his current value. It's a niche card and hardly ever a four-of in a Standard deck. I wouldn't be afraid to pick any up but don't expect any substantial price increase.

Modern Masters: my LGS got no boxes. The Magic community in my town is fairly small and also pretty cheap (read: don't make much money). I'm sure the LGS 20 miles down the road got some though. I'd love to draft me some MM.

Also, Block Constructed next Sunday is a go for me! Going to try to force Rakdos. Who knew there were so many ways to build a deck in a format with such a limited card pool?

Here we go, v0.3 of Exava Rakdos:

[deck]
Creatures (28)
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Foundry Street Denizen
3 Legion Loyalist
4 Spike Jester
4 Rakdos Shred-Freak
2 Rix Maadi Guildmage
4 Hellhole Flailer
3 Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch

Spells (11)
2 Civic Saber
2 Weapon Surge
3 Mizzium Mortars
4 Dreadbore

nLands (21)
4 Blood Crypt
2 Rakdos Guildgate
9 Mountain
6 Swamp

Sideboard (15)
4 Mugging
2 Electrickery
3 Act of Treason
2 Toil / Trouble
3 Auger Spree
1 Slaughter Games
[/deck]

I REALLY REALLY want Ash Zealot but I'm too conservative to play her on 15 red. At least Shred-Freak synergizes with Weapon Surge and Civic Saber.

Would you guys be interested in doing one of those Guild Wars type deals on Cockatrice within FoS? Or maybe even opening it up to everyone? I've got an idea for a hella Dimir deck, and I think all-in-all it could be fun, especially since it's a "play whenever you want" type thing.

@Dane: Kamahl said $180, which honestly seems reasonable to me, if you preordered them at the very beginning.

@Alex: That'd be awesome. We could also do a BYOS tourney.
