Yes MODO, I'd love for you to hide all my cards when I try to add them to my draft deck, and I'd LOVE to play with an 80-card pile with a random assortment of lands every game one.

Seriously, this is unacceptable. I don't get to play nearly as much paper Magic as I like, so I try to get some practice in on MODO, but this is unbearable.
as someone who exclusively drafts, this seems like user error

No trust me, it wasnt. I built the deck, submitted it, and got an error prompt saying that an error occurred during submission and to restart the program. I did, and was greeted with disappearing cards when I was forced to rebuild. Three other people reported the same exact error in the chat log, so it wasn't user error, but I appreciate your lack of confidence in my ability to click my cards.

Wait do all brewery's give you free beer if you tour there facility
Cause I may have a few weekends planned out now
Harpoon is local to Boston too and its brewery tour costs $5 but you get a couple free beers at the end. Sam's tour is just a "suggested donation" of $2. Then they pass around pitchers of various beers straight from the tank. The Boston location is the only one that tests new beers so you can get some stuff that you won't see anywhere else.

We have a lot of breweries in Atlanta (Jekyll, Monday Night, Sweetwater, Redbrick + others).

Sweetwater is like $10. Which they basically open the brewery for tours if you want them, or you can just hang out on the patios/huge bar and sample the beer. I think you get 6 tickets, 1 ticket = a beer, 2 tickets = heavy beer. It opens at 2, and closes at 4:30. So its a fun pre-happy hour happy hour. I went on my birthday last year and got pretty drunk, then procceded to black out towards the end of dinner. We all went back to pregame (at this point, I dont remember) but I remember walking into the bars at midnight and was cohereant until like 3 am.... TL DR, breweries are fun, especially with a lot of people.

More TL;DR - I dont think brewery tours are FREE, but the value you get from doing one might as well make it free.

I you guys ever come visit Toronto, we can tour the distillery district. Lots of tours, lots of beers, and a place where you can test drive segways once you're drunk :)

I want to visit Sam Adams in Boston. I have dreams about their fabled barrel room.

It's decent game. As far as deck building games like that go, I prefer Dominion or Marvel Legendary.

I guess you're playing the app version? I've never tried that. Only ever played on a real board.

I've played the app version, never the the real thing. It's ok, but far too tactical. It's very hard to form a strategy beforehand and then build a deck towards that. Too dependent on what cards show up in the middle row.

Yeah, and specifically when they show up. There's nothing worse than having bad turns when there's a card you want and finally you get a good turn, but nothing to buy. It's like compounding the luck factor.

My other major criticism of the game is that you get points for doing everything you want to be doing anyway. Generally the person with the strongest deck is also going to be the person with the most victory points. Dominion forces you to dilute your deck with Victory cards if you want to win. Legendary only rewards you for fighting, so you can't just sit back and buy things all game. With Asension you just buy cards to buy more cards which let you buy even more cards and then you win! There are different strategies to achieve that goal, but they all just generally depend on you doing more of the same.

Smallworld is my most recent board game obsession.

Posted: Wed Oct 29, 2014 6:33 pm
by Stardust
Smallworld is fun. Pretty simple, but even so I find it's often hard to know if you've made the right choice until after you've made it. Even with attacks you have to sometimes guess at what your opponent is going to choose since that will impact whether or not you target their active or in decline races. I've found that knowing your opponents helps your defense considerably as well since a nicely shaped region, away from where your opponents want to go, is a better defense than any number of guys stacked up.

My only problem with the game is that going last sucks both at the beginning and the end (last choice of race/class and then on the final turn everyone attacks you because you're the only person left to hurt) without any way to balance that. It's fun though, so who cares.

I'm interested in buying a few more multiplayer games. My girl's coworkers have a family dinner every Sunday that we go to. We drink and usually play Cards Against Humanity, but there's only so many times we can do that before it gets stale.

One of them plays Magic, but the rest have no desire to learn.

I suggested Werewolf, which is played much like mafia here on the forum.

Ideal game time is 45 minutes to an hour. We typically have 4-6 people.

Settlers is alright. Power Grid is ALOT of fun, but takes a game or two to learn to play optimally. Betrayal at the House on the Hill is also a lot of fun with a group.

This is probably my favorite game tbh: http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games- ... B00008URUS

Combines poltiics, with strategy in the most social way. Very enjoyable.

Try 7 Wonders. It's easy to learn, plays in that timeframe, works well with 4-6 (7 players max). The main mechanism in the game is card drafting, take one and pass to the right, and so on. Just like Magic drafts but with no deck buildning, you play the card after drafting it.

Some of my favorite games besides Dominion and 7 Wonders are:

Age of Steam - Railroad building with pick-up-and-deliver mechanism. Very, very cutthroat and nasty.
Puerto Rico - A good strategy game with a somewhat unique (when it was released) game play.
Power Grid - Good economic game, but as was mentioned takes a few plays to really shine, since some of the rules are a bit fiddly.
Brass - Very good economic game, but a bit heavy for casual play.
RoboRally - Pure chaotic fun, but can be a bit long.

Ascension - buy stuff that cantrips and lets you trash useless junk from your deck. The goal is to get to the point where you draw through your whole deck and generate about 10 whatever is used for money every turn.

Me and my friends used to gamble while playing ascenscion. I'm like 6-1.

The best thing to play around was void in my opinion, but you can win with anything so long as your flexible.

I second Settlers of Catan as a great game.

Carcassonne is a shorter one, easy and lots of fun. Get the Inns and Cathedrals expansion too. Let's you play with 6 (base game is 5) and feels like it should have been included in the original set anyway.

Smash Up is also a favourite of mine, but can only really be played with up to 4.

Citadels is a game for 2-8 players that's 45-60 minutes too. Draft new characters each round, use their special powers to assassinate, steal or get bonuses, then buy building cards to complete a city. I highly recommend this one since it's short, involves a bit of deception and gets people really into the game.

Smash Up with multiple expansions supprts more. One of my favorites.

Even though it does support more, I don't like playing with more. The bases are designed with a certain breakpoint. I've played 5 player a few times and didn't really care for it since I felt like I had far less impact on the game overall (since often I would play a guy and the base would score before it even came back to my turn).

I loved this game so much I actually made a set of 8 custom factions for it. This was back when they only had the Over 9000 expansion, so a few of my factions have since been used (Werewolves and Vampires being the obvious two).
