I'm quite sure the GP was Sealed, its the side events which are Standard and Modern.

Played Affinity at a Legacy IQ today. 5-1-1 into top 8, scooped in the finals to my opponent who was on Sneak and Show. We played for fun, I beat him a few games pretty easily (I'm playing counter magic in the main so the matchup isn't great for him) and good times were had. No scrumping here, unfortunately. :(

PS: James, when you get back, if you still have your pool, PLEASE post it over in the limited section and shoot me a PM. I'd love to go over the pool with you. Sealed is where I feel 100% the most comfortable.

If you play Affinity in Legacy and do well then you're playing at a scrump event and it doesn't count

I didn't really switch any cards except the lands, lol. Would have been modern legal minus the six artifact lands. Lots of scrumps playing manaless dredge that just lost to Cage and Spellbomb.

someone has to boost the DCI ratings of all the other players.

My buddy went 6-2 at the San Diego ptq with bw tokens featuring pack rat. It was his first modern event ever so he's feeling good about the ptq tomorrow.

Ill be ensouling artifacts on the morrow. Here's to the promised land of x-1.

Of course my criteria for an "amazing" pool is that it has multiple 2/1 flying dudes so take that for what its worth.

All joking aside, something had to have happened. Zem is a very good magic player and sealed isn't that hard. You either have a good pool, an average pool or a bad pool. I've seen Zem play enough to know he isn't a scrump. The fact that we expect results says something too. My guess is bad pool > worse luck. I just hope this doesn't discourage him.

Even the best players in the world have bad days. That's why you see Randy Buehler raving about 70% win rates during player profiles. That's still a 30% loss rate.

Yeah, looking at the standings we find Benjamin Stark at 9 points as well, at 445th place.

Luck is an element of any game. Sometimes you make all the correct decisions and still get beat. Bad beats happen, and they are typically caused by luck.

For example, I played against Bg Devotion the other day. I played around his drown in sorrow, but couldn't play around the next two. He only had three in his 75, but drew them consecutively.

Looking at the match up and the way the game played out, I consider that a bad beat. I still got him to 1 before I died.

the difference of course being that Benneth Starkman III is allowed to do bad because of previous finishes whereas Zemman Neverloyer Esq. still needs to break that barrier from obscurity with a big victory

Didn't everyone here link and fawn over some article about how luck doesn't exist and saying that you lost to bad luck makes you an asshole or something?

Or.is that just when non-FoS people say that?
Blaming your own losses on variance or bad luck is bad form because invariably there were little things (or large things, depending) you could have done better over the course of the game/match/day/weekend. And you also could have practiced more before whatever event you're tilting about.

The game still involves randomness though. And even disregarding that, everybody has bad outings here and there.

Look at this as an example:

It's hard to say either player played incorrectly, yet one had the turn of events work out incredibly well for him. It happens.

Hell the other day, I lost to a mill deck in modern because Turn Zero Archive Trap > T1 [card]Jace's Phantasm[/card] > T2 2x [card]Jace's Phantasm[/card] isn't a hand you can beat.

No such thing as a bad pool. If something happened, it had nothing to do with Magic. I've gone to tournaments while on tilt about other stuff and done terribly in the past. It happens.

It's also a much better field of players than your average tournament. GPs are not easy.

Agree to disagree.

I've
opened an abysmal pool, scrubbed out of a ptq and finished second in the Canadian Magic Cup in the same day.

I was in the same mindset, just had tools to work with in one and not in the other.
