Thoughtflare is a good card, so it's reasonable that he would play it.

As mentioned above, he's playing a control deck and I don't think you want to let your opponent control your draws when you're playing a control deck.

Lots of cheap interaction early, then you find a hammer, resolve it and proceed to draw 100% useable cards for the rest of the game.

grixis has always and will always suck

Grixis is good when you have battlecrusier cards a la cruel ultimatum and titans. It's pretty dookie otherwise which I find unfortunate.
