It must be at least a little bit, right? Like, you can't just pee on the side of a grass hut or all over someone's stand at the flea market. Right?
Because the largest city in Central America has grass huts. :V

Doesn't Mexico count as Central America? They don't speak English...

Point being, Mexico City is bigger. And full of grass huts, as far as I'm aware.

Nope, in the Hispanic view of the American continent, Mexico, Canada and the US are all in North America.

In the gringo view of the "Americas" we are too.

We have slums with huts, but they use galvanized steel sheets to build them.

To me, Central America is an idea more than an actual continent. Seperated not by landmass, but by culture and language. So I consider all of Central America to be within North America. Given that Mexico shares many similarities in culture and language to those countries South of it, I'd generally consider it Central as well.

But seeing as you live there, I'll defer to you. Other than Mexico not being included, would you disagree with what I just wrote? If so, why is Mexico counted out of that?

Well, the separation we make is right at the Yucatan peninsula where the big landmass we call North America starts becoming an isthmus.

But it's still an isthmus that's connected to North America? Why make the distinction at all?

Posted: Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:28 pm
by ( G_R )
Truth be told, the separation has more historic reasons than geographical ones.

When conquistador Pedro de Alvarado entered the remains of the Mayan civilization he conquered the area and was appointed Capitán General. His jurisdiction began in the now Mexican states of Chiapas and Quintana Roo.

It ended in the now Panamanian province of Chiriquí.

That became known as the kingdom of Guatemala, and even when it was a part of the viceroyalty of the New Spain (Now México) it had great autonomy.

When México gained independence from Spain, the kingdom remained a colony for a while. Our independence was achieved later, without an armed conflict.

So you're like Canada to Mexico's United States! ^_^

It would be smaller, but a sixth state, called Los Altos was split in half, one half is now a part of Mexico and the other was absorbed by the state of Guatemala.

Another reason that we consider Mexico a part of North America is that for centuries large parts of the current US were a part of the viceroyalty of the New Spain.

So really, you're saying you don't consider Central America a continent so much as just a region with a shared history?

Posted: Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:45 pm
by ( G_R )
It's a subcontinent. Just as North and South America. We consider the American continent as a single continent.

Posted: Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:47 pm
by ( G_R )
Same case with Europe and Asia. They're subcontinents of Eurasia.
