I've seen people unbanned on other forums, but I've never seen an appeal system let alone a public one. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, Sally is unique and there's nothing really stopping it from continuing to be unique in certain aspects. The thing to remember is that the nature of Sally's community first motto makes this situation unique.
I've seen it suggested that the Pegging Chamber be used and I think it would be a positive huggy feely end to everything if the last function of a gutter related forum was to make things right between each other.

It is a good idea in principle, except last time it didn't end well since we registered the account MTGCommunity to discuss the closure of the gutter (since at that point staff was claiming to be scared of posting ITT) and immediately PM'd the 4admins requesting access to the gutter-staff pegging chamber. Galspanic PM'd us back telling us that they would let us know their answer to our request.
Next day we logged to find the account banned with no further notice. That must have been the staff's notion of "getting back to you guys"

Though I'll say in their defense that things have improved since they are timidly exchanging ideas here now (since this ends up being the only place where banned and unbanned people can meet collectively). The level of dialogue went from bottom of the barrel to mediocre. If we continue taking baby steps, who knows where this may lead us?

That was a miscommunication and I am sorry for that. I'll admit that was not quite the best way, but regardless I think this is a better venue anyway.

The apology is appreciated. FWIW I will in turn apologise for reacting brashly and poorly in the wake of this event. I should have kept my cool better. Incident closed, I'll try to keep discussing with you guys here trying to be as much cool-headed as I can be.

Like, seriously, Galspanic?
I'm going to ask you a straight-forward question, and I'd like a straight-forward answer.
What do you think is going to happen to the site if you hold a public (when I say public, I mean only admins and Scumbag can discuss, but everyone, either on the site or in the Gutter, can see what is being said) ban appeal on your site?
I'm having trouble seeing what the downfall is/could be for public appeals.

Your definition of "public" here is not what I thought people had in mind so I don't know. It does seem weird giving preferential treatment to one banned member over another but I am also willing to say that not all banned members are the same, so I don't know. Some of the possible downsides
is staff backlash. It doesn't seem to be a majority, but there are a number of people I have a lot of respect for that do not agree with any of this. I've caught a lot of heat from people that don't think we should even consider letting people back. My attempts at compromise and leniency have been called weak, harmful to the site, and various forms of "not cool." Frankly, they might be right. So, there is the staff I worry about. Then, the first time someone doesn't like how things are going... to Community Issues! That tends to be how its been in the past and I am not stupid enough to think that it wouldn't happen again. That's the potential downfall I see.

Serious question here: If you guys are so continuously scared of Community Issues, why don't you just shut it down for good? You've done it already with the Gutter so there's precedence, and you could always claim that other sites don't have one subforum for these grievances.

Wait, are you seriously asking us for examples of other sites that host public appeals for bannings? And if enough examples are provided you'll consider it?

There's this awesome series of signs outside Albert Lea, MN (one of the centers where Spam is produced) on Interstate 90 that was designed in the old Burma Shave style of continuous signage, about one every four miles, that reads:
I scream!
You scream!
We all scream!
For:
Pork loin!

But Checkbox, it is a really important breakthrough. If someone from MTGS is actually faced with how silly things are when compared to the whole of the Greater Internet, it might actually do some type of permanent good.

It's been discussed as you can well image. It seems like redefining what CI is about is a better step in my opinion. Also, "you guys" might not be as accurate as you think. I am coming here by myself and do not talk to the guys about stuff before I post here. That's why Nai and I aren't saying the same thing and why I am not committing the anything - we have different ideas about a lot of stuff. In the end though we huddle before anything happens
and the feedback we get here is discussed.
Wait, are you seriously asking us for examples of other sites that host public appeals for bannings? And if enough examples are provided you'll consider it?
I am an artist and a pretty bad one in the traditional sense. My best stuff is copied, traced, edited, and repackaged. So yeah, I am not naive enough to assume we have come up with the best solutions. SomethingAwful's Leper Colony is a groundwork for something I would very much like to implement but... convincing people of that has been tough. Whatever though, that's just a concrete example of something I saw somewhere else that I think would serve a valuable purpose on MTGS and this is not the stage to spin my propaganda.
But Checkbox, it is a really important breakthrough. If someone from MTGS is actually faced with how silly things are when compared to the whole of the Greater Internet, it might actually do some type of permanent good.
Yes.
EDIT: Loco Moco with Spam is close to one of my favorite "foods." It started as an appreciation for ironic food and now is up there with Chicken Wings and Spaghetti from Patsy's in Denver.
