Legacy cause lol @ both
To be fair, I'd happily play Legacy if I were more willing to sell my arm, leg, and kidney for the manabase.

Maybe I can replace Mauler with firefist striker? Seems bad though.

I want to play Legacy so much. I have such an expensive deck (deathblade) but no tournament to play in.

Is Burning Earth good? I remember Manabarbs being awesome, but burning earth seems a bit narrow.

Burning Earth is more narrow in that it's only really good against 3 colour decks; but it's better than Manabarbs there because you can't get trapped under your own enchantment. It's a meta call in the board.

Firefist striker or maybe our old buddy Pyreheart Wolf? 2/2 Lightning Mauler / Pyrewild Shaman?

Happy B-Day Christensen.

Been stomping noobs with Naya Blitz. It's about as fun as gruul and the decision trees are great. I enjoy minor things like choosing between thalia or firefist striker when all you've seen is godless shrine. Guessed aristocrats and went striker. He follows with a drowned catacomb, I get punished and have my thalia syncopated :( Still owned him. Fact, your opponents don't always have the verdict. That and sometimes you ghor-clan a silverblade that gets blocked with an aetherling and you finish them with boros charm.

Aggro mirrors are kind of rough though. They run triple the removal.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Happy Birthday, Christen!

@Sasky - Goblin Shortcutter instead of Firefirst, maybe? A list running 4x Hellrider should by default also have enough to enable battalion reliably, but Shortcutter has the surprise factor with the ETB effect.

Neo-Fires of Yavimaya

[deck]
4 Arbor Elf
4 Deadbridge Goliath
4 Elvish Mystic
4 Gor-Clan Rampager
4 Kalonian Hydra

2 Garruk, Primal Hunter

4 Bonfire of the Damned
1 Devil's Play
4 Fervor
4 Gruul Keyrune

4 Kessig Wolf Run
4 Rootbound Crag
4 Stomping Ground
10 Forest
3 Mountain
[/deck]

Keyrune could be Borderland Ranger, that card is sweet here as well; but turn 3 hydra or Garruk seems gross. Note that I can play 37 mana sources because of the power level of the cards I'm ramping into.

Deadbridge / Gor-Clan are up for debate; maybe there should just be 4 Thragtusk in the deck as well because fuck it, 37 mana.

Maybe Gor-Clan should be Huntmaster; that would solidify the aggro matchup more and I am very comfortable passing and using wolf-run to flip.

Maybe I just want my creature suite to be Huntmaster / Thragtusk / Sire of Insanity...lol; stupid Jund.

4 Arbor Elf
4 Borderland Ranger
4
Elvish Mystic
4 Huntmaster of the Fells
3 Sire of Insanity
4 Thragtusk

2 Garruk, Primal Hunter

4 Bonfire of the Damned
2 Dreadbore
4 Fervor

2 Blood Crypt
3 Kessig Wolf Run
4 Overgrown Tomb
4 Rootbound Crag
4 Stomping Grounds

6 Forest
1 Mountain
1 Swamp

Might be going a bit deep.

Happy Bday Christen!

Looks like it'll be just Standard for me in the near future. I was talking to a buddy who decided to sell all his stuff and the conversation went something like:

Me: Why you selling your collection?
Him: Because I don't use it.
Me: So?
Him: Do you realize I have over $14,000 in Legacy cards and I haven't played in a Legacy tournament in 7 years?
Me: Good point...
Him: Hell, you've got a few grand in Modern staples, when's the last time you seriously played Modern?
Me: Hmmmmmmm...

So I gave him a bunch of stuff to liquidate for me. No more Modern for redthirst.

That's pretty much the reason I never really got into modern or legacy aside from them not being widely played at my LGS not that would play it tthere's just no scheduled tournaments so it would be for shits and giggles.

My local shop has Modern FNM once a month, and I don't see them stopping to do that. So Modern cards are still interesting to me. Legacy events are few and far between, so I wouldn't invest in Legacy cards. I have my burn deck, and some other stuff, and that enough for me.

Happy Birthday, Christen!

As for what I'll be playing in the near future, its going to be Standard, EDH, and Modern. Probably in that order. I just sold out of Legacy at GP Miami, saving only the P-Sully Burn list, which I'm halfway to foiling out (and probably never going to complete cuz Onlaught fetches foiled = the price of a black market kidney).

Standard is strictly going to be R/x aggro, probably forever. I sold out of all the cards I wasn't using and I ordered Mutavaults, Mindsparkers, Ogre Battledrivers, Young Pyromancers, and Burning Earths. Well, competitively speaking, I'll be happily stuck with Red. I always seem to like to make budget U/R lists randomly (I've been having fun on the side playing the Budget Izzet Blitz deck).

As for Modern, I currently have a gauntlet of awesome Tier 2 aggro decks: Merfish, Mono G Infect, RDW, Dega Burn, Kuldotha Red, Boros Landfall, and U/R Storm. In my area, I have one
LGS running Modern tourneys every Monday, another store running one every Wednesday, and yet another store running one on Thursday. Needless to say, Modern is pretty healthy in my area, even if I can't go play in them cuz of damn work schedule. In the meantime, I'm just helping my buddies run their Zoo Domain, Jund, Tron, or Twin lists through my aggro gauntlet in preparation. It makes me feel useful.

EDH is...well, EDH. Somehow, most of my testing nights devolve into EDH slugfests over hefty amounts of booze. Which is the way it should always be. I've got Kaalia, Nin, and Jaya Ballard - all redheads (I know Nin is bald...but check her carpet). I do have a funky idea right now to use another redhead: Lyzolda, the Blood Witch. The theme will be "what's your is mine, and what's mine is mine too," and all I really want to do is use a bunch of threatens to steal people's critters and then sac them afterwards. Man, this deck is going to be so shitty - and that's
the point.

I've been playing more and more MTGO for the very same reasons that you've all mentioned above. It's much easier to justify the investment in Modern staples if I can play the format regularly, and it's just not working out in paper.

Plus, streaming is the shit!

I'll probably keep my fetchlands though, and sell them before they ever get a MM reprint.

Happy birthday Christen!

So I just started MTGO and I've played a few casual matches of Momir Basic. I read somewhere that you can slowly build your amount of tix by playing Momir events. But is this the most efficient way? Let me know what you guys think is the quickest (or the easiest) way to get tix.

Evidence shows that everyone that plays DE Momir Basic is going infinite, albeit slowly.

Happy Birthday Christen!

What exactly is Momir? I haven't played MTGO in like 2 years. I'm thinking of getting back into it since I can only play paper once a week since my LGS is 40 minutes one way and I don't like making my wife take care of our 10 month old by herself all the time.

You play a deck of nothing but basic land and have a Momir avatar which reads something like:
[mana]X[/mana] : Discard a card, play a random spell with cc equal to [mana]X[/mana]
MTGO decides what the random spell is.

Head shots for 5 or 6 are hardly enough. The card was primarily there for combating Sphinx's Revelation which is not even the heart of the issue in a control match anymore. Revelations is about the only situation where this card holds constant value all of the way through and in the matches with Revelations, there are far more problematic cards like AEtherling or cards I would just rather pinpoint with Duress or AfB. The merit of the discard then becomes less warranted. Is the entire hand going to the yard relevant with the damage? Sure, but you are also evaluating a match that is much easier to shore up than most even without RR.
You heard it here first, folks, discarding 5 or 6 cards with Return is "hardly enough".

2 cards and 2 life: Amazeballs!
6 cards and 6 damage: Hardly enough.

Question all you want. Those are my reasons and if you need to resort to questioning someone's time or extreme examples of cards to prove your own argument that is your business. RR is only effective within a small moment of the game. Granted when you can stick RR during that time it is highly effective. That window doesn’t come around often or consistently to justify a spot in my list.

So are you playing bonfire? If so, why? If not, why not.
