What do you guys think of players who play lands in front and creatures behind?
That they are "old school"? It took me a long time to get rid of this behaviour, since that's how you played "back in the days".

For all of the Firefly followers in the clan, I was just reminded of my chat with Dan Dos Santos on Sunday. I asked about the Mal portrait he did, and it turns out that Fox--damn the evil empire--is again our nemesis. Dan is not allowed to produce and sell prints or anything else based on the portrait; they told him it would have to be worth at least $100K for them to even bother with drawing up an agreement regarding the painting, so in other words its a dead issue.

However, he shared something with me that is exciting nonetheless. He was waiting to hear that evening from Dark Horse...and may be doing a 6-issue run of Serenity for them in the near future. Needless to say, six issues of Dos Santos would be remarkable. Keep your eyes open and your fingers crossed...

You can get a warning for playing with your lands in front of your permanents at competitive REL events, but only if your opponent/the judge is a real dick. People do it all the time, it's fairly common, and you can even see many pros do it on camera regularly. (Paulo being one that comes to mind immediately.)

They enforce the "prescribed boardstate" now apparently. Had it happen to me last year at GP Orlando and I haven't done it since. :\

What do you guys think of players who play lands in front and creatures behind?
I did in elementary school. Because that's how the rules booklet shows you should play (I think it was Mirage).

I did never get why it was old school since I didn't play with people that did that in my early years of Magic (Mirage block).

Indifferent, but I find it weird.

I don't know about the Mirage rules booklet (I can check when get home), but at least the Revised rules and earlier showed lands above other permanent. So that's where it came from. The new (yes, it still feels a bit new style to me...) way is better of course.

Happy birthday, Alex!

Regarding Ratchet Bomb, I'm glad to see it. Maybe they'll print some more cool artifacts so I can troll people with Trading Post for a couple of months. I love Trading Post.

I love everyone saying that Ratchet Bomb is the death of tokens. Hilarious. I also can't wait for Voice of Resurgence to tank in response so I can pick them up for cheaper than they ought to be.

What do you guys think of players who play lands in front and creatures behind?
To each their own. Props to them, honestly. I know dudes who play with their decks upside-down, so they draw their cards upside down, and can snap em on the table facing the opponent. I don't know how they manage to do that one without being seriously annoyed.

It feels kinda sketchy to me, like they're trying to hide their creatures.

I don't remember anyone playing like that when I first started, which was a while ago.

It's funny. I started playing when Revised was new and we learned how to play out of the rules books. I honestly can't remember whether we played like that or not, but lands behind, creatures in front, artifacts/enchantments to the side feels very natural.

Lands in front as PV pointed out is actually way better to play against for the most part since it's going to be a lot harder for opponents to cheat when they tap there mana intentional or otherwise. It's not like you're going to not notice there creatures wherever they play them.

Having said that, I don't think I've ever not called someone out for tapping there mana wrong either way. Supreme verdict is a very mana intensive wrath ;-)

As far as how I actually play, anyone who sees my board set up can tell the first game I played was Yugioh. My graveyard is always directly above my deck, a habit I'm just now starting to try and break because I've found in limited, it causes opponents confusion with dead creatures vs. creatures on board.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

[deck]
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Dryad Militant
4 Frontline Medic
3 Hellrider
3 Legion Loyalist
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stromkirk Noble

4 Boros Charm
4 Searing Spear

4 Sacred Foundry
4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple Garden
6 Mountain
4 Plains
[/deck]

This deck does a lot of things I like. In particular, it has nasty maindeck hate for the three best current archetypes; green based midrange (medic and charm), reanimator (militant and loyalist) and control (pretty much everything).

Also, 12 premier 1 drops is very exciting.

Okay. Played the deck any yet?

Just from looking at it my opinion is that 15 one drops is excessive, there's not a lot to chain BTE into (besides another 1 drop), and the top end is anemic.

It looks slower and smaller than Gruul Sligh without being significantly more resilient, though the tech is cool and Boros Charm is a nice suprise that also gives the deck more reach.

I'd be interested in hearing about your MUs.

So if this goes in M14, we are officially saying goodbye to Thundermaw (takes his slot as a dragon mythic). It doesn't look as playable though.

Train your wolf to play Magic - nothing like post-coital card flopping.

The mana base should be able to support a Slayers' Stronghold or two.

New dragon can eat a dick.

On 22 land it would be ambitious to include even a single stronghold. You could board them I guess.

Your curve is super low and tops out on 3 Hellriders - you could get away with 21 lands if you just wanted to.

Sure, but I'd rather have the 12th white source for consistency (and 22 lands is better when you have some number of 4s anyway).

Time for a little metagaming...

Kansas States were utterly dominated by aggro--5 Naya, 2 Gruul and a Bantchantments deck at top 8. For Game Day (my LGS is in KS), I'm considering black-based control or Grixis, the object being to hit them for multiple-for-ones and play some draw as well for overall CA. Am I in the right neighborhood or in the wrong universe altogether? I'm leaning towards Rock or Junk control (green for ramp as both Naya and Gruul carry enough removal to shoot down Crypt Ghast), but perhaps midrange makes more sense? I know that aggro as a rule whomps control, but taking a sweeper approach followed by landing big threats against removal-light decks seems a logical strategy. Thoughts?

Gotta go get some sleep as I have to pick multiple kids up from band rehearsal before work tonight...I'd very much appreciate any and all input.
