So...there exists a pocket in alternate planar space somewhere that is full of missing 4ths? Probably sharing some congruity with the one where all the missing socks end up? I can't remember the author, but I read a fantasy book years ago where the protagonist at one point in planar travel finds "the sock universe"--too funny. I personally want to find the one that contains all the baseball cards and comic books thrown out by moms back in the 60's and 70's while "cleaning" kids' rooms. I figure I could retire early...

I used to have a playset of Japanese phoenixes. Got them off ebay for $1 + $1 shipping. Now I have 3, and I'm very confused as to where the fourth could have gotten to.
I am facing the same problem with my promo phoenixes. I have 3 and 1 went missing.
You guys probably tried burning them to see if it'll rise from the ashes... :P

Spectrum is almost here...

Each pile of cards represents a Magic artist that will be exhibiting at the show...and that doesn't begin to touch on the pile of books I have for Brom, Whelan, Dos Santos and others. This is gonna be nuts...

I dunno how much they'd help since you dont' have anything to abuse the fetches (no lavaman, no landfall, nothing needing shuffle effect, and you don't need the mana fixing in two colors)

Thank you very much guys! It should be a good day :)

@photo: wow, you're meeting Brom, how cool is that! Please express extra admiration for him from me :grovel:

@ham:  so true. The fun part is even when you start to be aware of it you still tend to overdo it, I reckon. Like one time back when I was in my study-abroad year, it's 3AM, I'm going home from a friend's and I cross this friend-of-a-friend with whom I'd flirted a few weeks back. Her friends keep moving and she asks me "what are you doing now?" and I say "well I'm going home to make some ice-cream for tomorrow, if you want to come", and she did. We actually made ice-cream and even danced bachata (more on that later) in my kitchen before I actually jumped her. Win-more! :rolleyes2:

Also funny is how they usually get curious about us waaaaaay before we sometimes even notice them. I'd usually steer conversations with girlfriends to that subject and it always surprised me. This girl told me she wanted to dance with me in a bachata workshop we'd both been to weeks before we even met (going in with a tall blonde Norwegian helps your status apparently), and I didn't even see her that night. Admittedly, there was a lot to be seen in that room

@photo: wow, you're meeting Brom, how cool is that! Please express extra admiration for him from me :grovel:
Man, I tell ya...Brom and Michael Whelan come the closest to inspiring actual intimidation for me. I mean, the early gods of fantasy were blowing my original mental circuits as a kid in the 70's (Whelan, Frazetta and Vallejo mostly then...Brom is only a year older than I) and changing my classicly-constrained views of art. Actually, I'm hoping to catch Brom with a couple of minutes to talk as I really would love to hear his insights as an artist and parent on helping kids choose their path. My son displays amazing potential in both art and music--
whichs sings to the artist in me--but my practical side wants to tell him to play the percentages and keep racking up the A's to chase more academic pursuits (his current target is engineering/robotics).

I'm totally stoked about the weekend...my kids are laughing at me because I've been in a total geek-fanboy haze all week! :p

'morning, gents.

Happy birthday, Fax.

@photo -- I am very much looking forward to finally meeting some of the artists on Saturday. Like you, I've been pulling cards out to be signed. What's the etiquette for having them sign cards? One? A full playset? My favorite card artwork is Desolation Angel, so I'm stoked that Brom will be there.

I wish Peter Mohrbacher could be there. He's the one who did Knight of Infamy, Bloodgift Demon, Grimgrin, etc. I really want to ask him about a custom playmat with the Knight artwork.

Windstrider - Steve Argyle has already answered your question more completely and hilariously than I could ever hope to. Thus, I give to you:

Steve Argyle's Card-Signing Commandments

I used to bring along and post a page of "Argyle's Ruthlessly Draconian Event Protocols" that declared the depth of my tyranny to all patrons. But the folks who bothered to read it were the polite players, who don't need it in the first place. So now, I don't really bother with rules. If someone drops a giant stack of cards, I'll tell them the story of an artist who had a player unromantically thrust a similar size deck at him, then got on his phone with an "I'll be back in ten, have those signed." The artist scrawled one signature across the stack itself and handed it back. Then I politely ask, "Now which ones of these did you
want me to sign?"

Like I said, the folks who read stuff like this aren't the ones you have to worry about. But for the sake of answering the question: Steve Argyle's Ten Commandments.

Thou shalt keep thy stacks to a few playsets.
Thou shalt prepare. Don't dig through your stuff and toss a double-sleeved card out every thirty seconds for ten minutes while everyone waits.
Thou shalt not ask "Which cards did you do?" (The list is too long to constantly go over. I don't remember them anyway.)
Thou shalt not pull out each card in your deck/binder and ask "did you do this card?"
Thou shalt not ask me to sign something I had nothing to do with, like another artist's card, the lucky underwear you wore to win your last event, or your fresh hernia scar.
Thou shalt not cut in line, ask "why are people in line?", then drop your
bags on my stuff with a "Hang on, I think I've got something here for you to sign. It's worth more that way, right? Like if I sell it? Who are you again?"

Thou shalt respect answers I give. If you want a card alter, or a sketch, and I say "I can do that for $X human earth moneys," your next phrase should not be "No, no, just do something quick or whatever. Nothing that I have to pay for. I'm just gonna sell this to buy a Jace, the Mind Sculptor, anyway."
Thou shalt not know what the eighth commandment says.
Thou shalt not fear me. Seriously, the above shouldn't scare you. I'm mostly nice. Come on over, chat, look at pictures, I won't bite, and I don't expect folks to buy stuff.
Thou shalt enjoy thyself. That's why we all come to events in the first place.
And one last thing, not so much a commandment, as just advice: It's best to see me as soon as
you can. I run out of stuff, and my queues fill up fast. I often bring alters I did before the show, and they're mostly gone in an hour. I was out of Liliana mats at my last GP by noon on Saturday. I'm usually fully booked for take-home stuff just after lunch the first day of any event. So, don't skip a match or anything, but if you wait too long, you'll miss a lot.

All depends on the artist. Some, like Steve Argyle, make a big chunk of their income doing card alters, custom-drawn playmats and so on beyond selling prints of their work and originals. Others rely on prints and original works that they prep beforehand. Most anyone in Magic will sign cards for you just while chatting; same with illustrators and signing books. If you want more, there's generally money involved, and if you're willing to spend, then the sky's the limit. The other cool thing that some of the Magic artists will do is custom-sketched cards, like tokens and such. rk post even has his own
custom blank cards (with a design of his making on the back) and for a nominal fee he will sketch something up for you. There's a little of everything...some artists will even be working on major pieces at their booths as their deadlines don't go away just because of the convention.
