Beginner friendly is definitely tough. Even though most places have free FNM, people are pretty cutthroat.
I played from some of the early days of the game, but took a long break, and just got back into the game, and introduced my wife to it just prior to RTR...so it was a bit frustrating for her to get into a community that was so competitive (even if they don't play T1 decks in a lot of places...they're still competitive.) We've found the best success in drafting, since everyone's on equal footing, and it's helped both of our card evaluation skills.
Otherwise...I'd say Hastur's on State is probably the least competitive place, but the people there still take FNM seriously (I really don't, as long as I'm not paying.)
