That's actually a good idea. I commend the iridium for their clarity of vision in this matter!

That was the one thing I thought was really strange about that announcement. Individual helpdesks are a plague. Group helpdesks are the way of the future!

I'm glad my job blocked MTGS. If they hadn't, I would have been tempted to go there during my off time at work.

That's the one... I guess I should first ask if the Speakeasy is still a thing.

While I think it's fine to for MTGS to have a store (especially if it can keep those sound ads away), I have an issue with one of the Items that are for sale. The shop allows users to purchase an "unban". This undermines the integrity of the community. While some moderators are a bit zealous with how they dispense justice the moderation on this site is generally fair and effective. Allowing for unbans to be purchased not only allows toxic members to rejoin the forum and bring down the community as a whole. In addition it creates a conflict of interest for moderators. Revenue generated by "unban" purchases could result in pressure on moderators to ban users more frequently and with less discretion. I can't imagine $15 being worth undermining the integrity of the site and the community which supports it in the first place.

In the cases of immature people acting immature who then grow up and are still haunted by their immaturity, I can see this being a good thing. Like, if Scumbag suddenly decided to become all about the MTG and decided he actually needs MTGS for trades and sales, then I could see him paying the fee to become unbanned, then using his account, not to get stirred up in DRAMA, but to buy/sell/trades cards for his newfound passion. While I think it's fine to for MTGS to have a store (especially if it can keep those sound ads away), I have an issue with one of the Items that are for sale. Of course it opens up the site to extended Moderator abuse of power, but practically any major change they make could result in the same.

I'm guessing the logic is that that way they'll only get people petitioning for unban if they really care about the site?

I guess.
Though, really, if someone's willing to pay $X just to be able to post on that site, more power to them. If they decide to be a tool and get banned again...that's on them.

I feared clicking when I read "sound adds", but then I remembered I have AdBlock. Then I saw you need to log in to view the store and I remembered I'm banned.

I wonder how buying the unban works if banned members cannot access the store.

As much as the data for users and visitors may say that the site is healthy, I can honestly tell you that it's anything but. I've been around here for a good while now and the site just isn't what it used to be when it comes to QUALITY interactive posting. The GP threads hardly even reach 2 pages anymore of people discussing, the threads for decks that aren't tier 1 go without feedback or interest, no really new contributions, the list goes on and on. If you used to post a deck in something like Standard Deck Creation and it got no replies then it would be on the second page within a day. As of now the oldest thread on the 1st page of Standard Deck Creation is May 7th, over a week ago. People aren't coming here to contribute to the community.
People may be lurking and reading, but people come to a forum based on content. What happens when the people who used to actually create that content to lurk on suddenly aren't involved anymore because it's a waste of time to contribute with no feedback and discussion? I have been playing a brew online that is different than any other Standard decks on here, and I've established a very good winning record with it but I don't post it. Why? Because it's a lot of work to post an in depth explanation of decks only to have people ignore them. Nobody is interested in these forums for anything other than what they can steal from the established tier 1 decks. That used to not be the case, and it's the reason this place is dying IMO.
The less talk could also come down to the outside of magic areas having less activity (especially WCT, Debate, and Clans) as well as the fact that we lost most of the gutter group over the last few years since we closed that down.

R.I.P Sene, I will miss reading his posts asking for respect while at the same time mods were talking shit about people behind closed doors.

In his defense, Sene rarely (if ever?) "talked shit" about people. I always found him quite respectful, albeit weak-spined.
He's good people. Just no-so-much good leadership due to his non-confrontational nature.
