Zach Jesse banned

causing quite a stir and I'd like to hear what y'all think. From what I've gathered, Zach Jesse was charged with sexual assault in 2004. Then quite about a month or so ago he top 8'd a Grand Prix. Drew Levin (some magic dude apparently, never heard of him before this) was bringing up his criminal history on twitter, and it became a big deal for a day or two. Today, Zach Jesse was banned by WotC until 2049 (so probably a life time ban).

Personally, I think it is dumb that they banned him considering his case is like 10 years old. It would be understandable if it was relatively recent, but it just isn't. I'm also disappointed that if Drew Levin didn't say anything, nothing would've happened. Seems like WotC acted on public opinion (I don't think it is majority opinion either), which is dangerous

Sex offenders are the Modern-Day pariahs of society. Whether or not you "morally" agree with how they're treated after they've served their sentences, Jesse's ban seems on-par.

Ban is ridiculous and unjustifiable.

If there's a way in which this ban is good it's in waking people up to the threat of SJ online activism.

I'm far from being an expert on the subject, but we did study Rape Shield and related laws in my Evidence class. If Jesse's ban from Magic gets you going, you don't want to know about the rights the accused loses in court.

I also find it interesting that this is happening right on the tails of the "women in Magic" discussions.

Some french pro friends of mine have played Drew Levin. He's a complete asshole, trashtalk and do everything around the rules that could get him a win.

This isn't really Drew Levin's fault. Maybe he whiny-bitched about it and put attention on it, but that doesn't mean it's his fault. It's either Zach Jesse's fault for being a rapist or WOTC's fault for being overly harsh in their 10-year late punishment, depending on which side you take.

he plead guilty and did his time. he's not a habitual offender like what kait has to deal with on a daily basis. im not being some rape apologist shitbag and you can call me whatever name you can but im pointing out he did his time, and that if wotc is gonna go after these kind of people, then chaplin needs a lifetime ban because he did more time.

Sorry, but in Europe, you mostly are not required to notify noone about your past time served. Not to your neighbours, not in your job interview, etc...

In my opinion, if people think criminal offenders are not getting enough punishment, just increase the sentences time, otherwise you might as well tatoo "robber", "murderer", or "rapist" in people's foreheads, it will save these hassles.
