It's really hard to rank Modern decks in terms of tiers. In my opinion, Modern is so wide open right now that it could almost be summed up as a bunch of "Tier 1.5" duking it out for the top spot. What it boils down to is, what is your deck made to prey on and what can it reasonably fight against postboard?Tier 1:What do you guys think the top tier modern decks are right now?
Amulet Bloom
GR Tron
Jund
Twin (Grixis > Temur > UR)
Tier 1.5:
Grixis Delver
Affinity?
Tier 2:
Burn
Collected Abzan
Not really, but with both Bloom and Tron as Tier 1 strategies, and 3-color decks rounding out the rest of Tier 1, LD isn't horrible. But it probably shouldn't be the primary angle of attack. Also is there a Fulminator / Revilark LD Deck?
The "big" decks to consider right now is pretty simple:
Affinity
Twin (U/R, Temur, and Grixis)
Tron
Amulet
Bg/x (Jund, Junk)
Grixis varieties (Control, Delver)
Infect
Burn
Merfolk
Elves
CoCo
Scapeshift
After that, it's a whole slew of strategies ranging from Graveyard shenanigans (Living End, Vengeance) to outright combo (Ad Nauseam). You can't prepare for all of them and they all stand a chance.
The trick is picking up on what 4-6 decks are taking up a large portion of the metagame and go after/defend against that.
For example, whether or not you consider Burn or Amulet "Tier 1" or "Tier 2", if you're going to play in a GP or online, you WILL see those decks and probably face them numerous times. It doesn't matter what you rank them or how you rank them. If they're going to be vastly represented, you need to be prepared to fight them and you'll need to know your matchup percentages against them.
In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.

Burn is extremely viable. Hell, one of our own here on DtR made Top 8 at GP:Charlotte playing Burn. I'd say it's still very good. It's still viable but it's no longer "ermagerd too stronk banhammerz pls"Guess burn has fallen out of favour too?
re: Zoo: Kibler keeps forcing it, but it's not quite there. Could probably get some surprise wins, and Collected Company is a really good card, but you probably won't spike a large tournament with it. Maybe smaller ones.

There's a really interesting Zoo variant I've been seeing online that is called "Zoo-icide". The plan is to drop your life total and quickly and attack with a Death's Shadow and pump him with a Become Immense or target him with Temur Battle range. It also plays a lot of the usual Zoo suspects - Guide, Swiftspear, Steppe Lynx, etc - but it has some card draw with Street Wraith, Git Probe, and Mishra's Bauble (most of which drain your life to make the Shadow bigger).Zoo isn't a thing?
In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.

The best analogy I can make of Modern is the Hearthstone ladder meta. Various decks are all "good," many just aren't good right now. So, for example, Burn has not done anything in a while but it's lost nothing and gained nothing, the meta has merely shifted against it. Elf Company is presumably good, but the last time I saw it in a Daily it was one of at 3-1. RG Tron is also good, but it didn't(?) t8 either of the last two Modern GPs.
I would bet against Zoo most days of the week because it's the most fair deck in a format of decks that render you as an opponent irrelevant or play fair while not letting you play. Also because Bolt/Path/Terminate/Inquisition/Decay is the path of the fair decks, which line up very well with your threats.
People keep doing well with Merfolk which is wild to me, but I would also continue to assume someone else is going to do something about it so I don't have to.

As long as Affinity is under represented, Merfolk will continue to do well.

As far as new decks go I really like the Kiki Chord one. I'm a big fan of toolbox decks.

Playing modern isn't so much about tiers as it is about what type of deck should you play.
format's comboey? Play Junk/jund.
Midrangey? Tron.
Tron did well recently? Anything that goldfishes(affinity, burn, infect, etc.)
Combo week? Time to play UR decks.
In modern, currently, we're in combo week, which means if you want to win, you should play jund/junk to get a jump on the twin and grixis tempo decks if you're a metagmer, or you can try running any of the faast combo decks(I like the new grishoalbrand deck which is confirmed broken as fuck).

If someone put a gun to my head and asked me what the best deck was though, I'd say either whatever the fastest resilent deck is or twin. With the nature of how obtuse sideboarding is in modern, playing something degeneratly broken gives you the best chance of beating people before they draw the SB cards they need to play magic and Twin beats all of those people while still always threatening turn 4 wins.

I have an SMS alert set up on my phone when Twin is no longer the default best deck. On that day I will make my return to the sea.

I have the entire Legacy deck foiled out with the exception of fetches and Sulfuric Vortex. Same with Modern except for three Boros Charm and the shocklands.

You do need to try to gay it up a little more.
You're like the least gay member of this clan.
And that's counting the fact that you voluntarily have sex with men.

Wow people really didn't like the mention of tiers. Talk about triggers.
I'm not sure what your definitions of tier are but mine is how prevalent the deck currently is. Which is exactly what you guys were talking about after shitting on the word.

Gosh I just found out that I lost a game against Poison due to a fucking misread.
Deflecting palm a lethal poison creature, my opponent plays Apostle's Blessing on Red in response. I concede.
I've been thinking about it since last week-end, should have followed my instinct and call a judge. Dammit !

Yes, but still a good card. Spell Mastery should be a given unless someone plops down a Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void, which they shouldn't against Burn. We don't get many options to burn player or creature for 4 with one card, and it importantly does more dmg than it costs in mana. Probably only want this if you're already packing some number of Flame Javelin, but it replaces it because it gets around Dispel and Negate which are some of blue's anti-burn cards of choice.

It seems awesome in Standard and mostly outclassed by everything in other formats. Like maybe as a sideboard card against a control-heavy meta, but the aforementioned Flame Javelin already exists and sees virtually no play.

Yeah, Standard card mainly, but pushes Burn as a legit strategy for Standard now. I was telling someone yesterday that the archetype was basically one card away. Now it's something worth exploring.

"If Ms. Wolff wants women to be more visible, she needs to encourage women to create the kind of content that both men and women want to read and have that person have the kind of visibility that Mark Rosewater has. This is no different than Barbara Walters or Katie Couric. Yea sure, we originally had Walter Croncite. But we also have to contend with the fact that Mr. Rosewater is Jewish."
