Nekusar's headaches

So Jeleva is neat and all, but the real action in that box is Nukusar, the mindrazer (actually it's probably either true-name nemesis or strategic planning, but neither of those can be commanders). He combines howling mine and underworld dreams, two great tastes than taste great together. And grixis colors are the best colors for these shenanigans. This deck is not built to be the fast combo-ish play nekusar and all the wheel effects i can find, but more a slow, grindy control version. I have chosen not to focus on counters, as my local meta will usually hate out counter heavy decks fairly quickly, which means I am instead running a very kill spell heavy version.

Current Maybe Board

Vengeful pharaoh - an interesting self reccuring defensive measure. The fact that it puts itself on top of your library, not your
hand, can get annoying. But I figure that this deck does a fine job of drawing extra cards, enough so that it is unlikely to hamstring me. It speaks to Redthirst's no quarter suggestion at a fraction of the price (and unfortunately efficacy).
Molten disaster - uncounterable board wipes are always nice. Doesn't hit flier which is bad, but it does hit players which is definitely a mixed bag.
Sculpting steel - other decks run lots of nice artifacts, now I can have them too. Was avoiding clones (especially given all my mass removal), but being able to hit utility artifacts is nice, It's not metamorph, but I don't have one of those handy.
Blightsteel colossus - a big dumb fat backup plan, and I can use damnation to clear it a path.
spinal embrace - probably not a good choice, but I think it has style potential (especially with that creepy ass art&#
41;. The big selling point (since I'm already in red and have my choice of threaten effects) is that the sacrifice is baked in, which given my lack of outlets is nice, there are definitely better sac effects, but gaining life is better than giving it back at EOT.
Crawlspace - first off we have another awesome peice of creepy art, which counts for something in my book. Secondly the effect hoses many token and swarm strategies.
Molten Psyche - I know that I am ru. ow wheel count version, but I have just enough artifacts to make the metalcraft a reasonable possibility, which makes this hit like a sack of hammers.
Arcane Denial - Normally I hate this card, but it's actually hilariously synergistic here.
Bloodgift Demon - A big flying phyrexian arena, but I can give the draw to someone else to get some extra damage in.
Tragic Slip -
BIG -x/-x kill that hits almost everything (barring hexproof, shroud, protection, some */*'s, and Worldspine Worm), for 1 mana as an instant, it's just a question .
of how often the morbid condition is going to be met.
Murder - could not be a more beautiful and simple kill spell.
Isochron Scepter - If I change the spells a little bit to support more 2cc instants this could to a lot of work (I'm just imagining combining it with arcane denial)
Aeon Chronicler - Does work similar to psychosis crawler, but instead of giving me damage for my draws, it gives me draw while suspended.
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind - The other half of psychosis crawler, only on a body with T:draw.
karn liberated - was originally in the deck, if nothing else being 2 vindicates is fantastic, but I have ultimated him before and it was epic. Another "
style over substance" option.

I am just picked a bunch of staples for this deck.
Cards to consider:
Requilary Tower
a good replacement for academy ruins since I forgot about it when I removed mind slaver
Rouge's passage for Shocker
seems a touch unreliable as a two card combo[/card]
Tainted peak
probably a good choice, the blue version might be decent too
Oona, queen of the fae, late game or when Forced Frution hits board.
wasn't going to put that much focus on the mill theme, but the lure of a bunch of faerie tokens is pretty compelling, she might actually be able to do what I was hoping to do with meloku before he got the chop
Skithiryx, the blight
dragon, faster kill
a worthy inclusion in nearly every black deck, was avoiding poison though, will consider some testing anyway.
Diana, kalastria bloodchief, kill indestructible guys
forgot what she did, looked her up and that is savage
Kumano, master yamabushi, kill off player or little creatures
the problem is having enough red mana to feed him, he was in the first edit of the deck, but got cut when he could fire only 2 times per turn
Olivia Voldaren
similar problems to kumano, though she has far better tricks up her sleeves than just exile
Jace Beleren
already in the list[/card]
Corrupted Conscience, not as good as glistening oil, but has utility of making nekusar deadly or steal a real threat
hadn't even thought of corrupting nekusar, but that is some vicious versatility
Forced Fruition, ends games
nhadn't considered this either, mostly because I forgot it existed
Evacuation, problems with Ruud Awakening decks?
haven't actually seen rude awakenign played since mirrodin rotated out of standard

tested this and I didn't really like it, the creature count is fairly low for this to be reliable

Mindslaver, academy ruin bs
specifically already cut, people see it and gang up on me instantly
Ensnaring bridge, surprisingly good against aggro or equipment voltron decks.
I understand this stopping voltron, but with all the everybody draws stuff, how is this stopping aggro?

How about we build 2 versions. The constant draw/Wheel of Fortune deck and your control version. Why clutter up the thread with Multiple Nekusar deks? I will rewite my fist poste to show my version. I alsi just spent a ton of money getting cards for it from 3 shops on a road trip.

Not a fan of the Discard theme except Bloodchief Ascention. Whipering Madness is just another Wheel of Fortune. I prefer version that "shuffle hand in Library" more than "discard Hand". Winds of Change and Molten Psyche are better but that's what we got to work with. Don't diss Shocker. He can specifically target a guy to wheel of fortune to death and getting rogue's passage online is fairly easy. I kicked out Mindslaver cause it I needed more draw artifacts, but Acadamy Ruins always stays in to recover hurting artifacts. Evacuation is so good. Ruude awakening can pop out of no where and you could run into an infinate combo of dudes. Instant speed is really the seller here. Changed out the Corrupted ConScience for Glistening oil.
Cards I am thinking about adding or pulling
Thran Dynamo- adding, great mana excelleration
Phyrexian Tyranny- Pulling, hurts me more than them, but it slows down the game
nBlack Sun's Zenith- pulling, it's ok but requires alot of mana to kill big shit
Sensei's Divining Top- pulling, blaspheme i know! I just draw to much get the value of Spending for it.
Ensnaring Bridge- pulling, REALLY ike this card as I don't need to attack to win, but my hand is generally huge
Crawl Space-adding, in place of Ensaring Bridge

Fate unraveler is totes in, not as resilient as underworld dreams, but not triple costed is so nice. Drown in sorrow and mogis are also in for some testing.

As far as an updated list goes, I don't have one at the moment. Still need jace, murder, terminate, and puzzle box. Trying to avoid the temptation of spending a ton on fixing up the mana base (it's functional at the moment, not perfect, but good enough that color screw is fairly rare). Also considering thought courier.

I know that murder and terminate are commons that I should already have, but they haven't been pressing. Go for the throat and sudden death
have filled in well in the interim.
You should really try:

Forced Fruition- Ends games if played timely, and makes weenie think twice about playing lots of shit.
Molten Psyche- Can easily deal 14 damage with your commander since we run so many artifacts.
Bloodchief Ascension- I have gone from 2 life back to 40 in no time from this being in game early.
Psychosis Crawler- This plus commander makes draws for you during wheel cards shock for your opponents. Can get really big to block with.
[card]Venser's Journal[/card]- Another life saving artifact for you. It's awsome when you have 7 or more in hand EVERY turn!
[card]Rouge's Passage[/card]- gets those wheel creature effects in for the kill or mass damage. I have won with just that route.
I would pass on Mogis dude. There is better shit to be doing with 4 mana
that this deck needs to do. 2 damage every turn that you can't increase with synergy is a poor investment.

Toil is one half of toil and trouble, but I don't know the syntax for spilt cards.
Dragon mage, rimescale dragon, and storm breath dragon are included for several reasons.
1) a commander deck doesn't feel right with out some fatty boom booms.
2) stormy and mage fit in very well synergistically
3) rimescale is fairly potent demi-removal (and a good excuse to use snow lands).
4) both rimescale and mage are reusable
Even without bounce ftk is fair removal that leaves a decent body behind, much like a slightly worse shriekmaw. Like shriekmaw you run him if you're in the color.
Mirari has proven usable repeatedly, I usually end up just copying removal spells with it, but that's just fine. 3 copies is suddenly card advantage.
Venser's journal is already in the deck.
Mogis may have no synergy, but he's indestructible, and it's honestly just a test. I have hopes, but won't be sorely disappointed if I have to
pull him.
Psychosis crawler, molten psyche, and blood chief ascension are up for tests if I can get ahold of them.
Twisted abomb is usually just for the swamp, but a regenerating 5 power blocker is nothing to sneeze at, has saved my butt a couple times. The flexibility is really nice. Never had a bad time with him.
My concern with forced fruition is purely monetary. It doesn't do as much as some of the other money cards I am after. Mostly I have found that having wheels is not as important as having good control cards. And yes I consider $5 a "money card" as I am broke.
Vampire hexmage is fine as is, yes she would be better if you added a keyword, but lack of first strike doesn't keep me from playing goblin guide in modern, does it? BB: destroy target planeswalker is good enough, and a 2/2 on top is just gravy.
Don't have a shocker, barbed shocker is on the verge of getting cut. He dies way too easy and has no built in evasion. Rogue's passage might help, but it's only relevant to
him and he's on the chopping block (probably for molten psyche if I add it).
Mystical teachings does all the things (twice). Usually it just fetches removal, but being able to do it twice is the the thing.

I'll second the Psychosis Crawler suggestion. This deck will regularly put a 10/10 Crawler on the field. It's a beautiful thing.

Finally got a baby jace! Waiting on some orders and trades, will post update as soon as I sit down for some deck edits. Will say that gild is performing a touch above expectations, mostly because I see a lot of people running gods as part of the 99.

I like the version of this deck that mostly negates the advantages from all the extra draws instead of just giving all your opponents CA and hoping they don't use it to kill you.

Cards like Anvil of Bogardan give your opponent an extra card draw without actually giving him an extra card and Chains of Mephistopheles negates all the CA while still causing your opponents to draw and take damage.

Either way you decide to go, I'd also try to squeeze in a few more ways to protect your ass from all the extra threats the CA will generate like sweepers, No Mercy, and Nether Void.

Guy was using Underworld Dreams with Shocker and Barbed Shocker against people with few blockers. Might be something to try out.

Didn't like barbed shocker, he was too fragile and lacks onboard evasion. I rarely see people devoid of blockers, and if I do it's usually because of board wipes (which would kill my own bugs). Dragon Mage does this job, but he's far more resilient and flies.

Recent change: -Stormbreath Dragon, +[card]Lim-Dûl's Vault[/card]. Vault is sooooooooo good.

Lim Dul's Vault is one of my favorite cards. It's the perfect card to set up your next draw.
The last game I played with the deck it came down to using this card to dig for any mass removal that didn't hurt me. I was 10 life staring down a 10/10 and a huge mass of tokens, I ended up burning through 7 life and finding damnation to get the job done. Won on my opponent's next drawstep.

Another swap: -dismiss +deep analysis
The number of counters is purposefully low, and there are better counters that could be played if I weren't, I needed targeted card draw for either setting me up, or having the option to just shock them with it late game, and deep analysis does that twice as
an instant. Would not have remembered it if I hadn't been listening to maro's drive to work (he just finished a three parter on Torment).

Also -forbidden orchard and sulfur vent +temple of deceit and Blackcleave cliffs
I love forbidden orchard, it's a fun card with a few interesting political applications, but I think we can all agree that it's bad. I ended up with a temple of deceit thanks to some unintentional real world deception, so in it goes and forbidden orchard ran out of borrowed time. Sulfur vent was so rarely worth sacing and setting back my development, and late game it was never needed, the cliffs are more useful, but I wish I would have had darkslick shores, because my manabase is a little light on U/X duals, at least compared to R/X. Black is fine, I am only running 15 lands that do not produce B.

He gives your opponents cards. He doesn't give you cards. With only one pain effect in place, those cards cost 1 life each, which is more than reasonable. 2 life per extra card isn't even that bad.

The body isn't that relevant. Your deck doesn't seem to have much to go aggro with him starting turn 4, so he'll likely just play like a Vampire Nighthawk.

Idk, you've played the deck and I haven't, but a Howling Mine that plays for the wrong side just doesn't seem good.

It's not a high priority card, it just seemed like the drawback was perfect for the deck. He is one of several howling mine effects I'm running and the right way to play this deck is to basically ignore the concept of card advantage because it gives everyone a ton of cards and just focus on knowing when to hit the reset buttons.

DS is probably right on this one. His opponents are already going to have more cards than they know what to do with. It's definitely worse than a Howling Mine since the 5 damage it can attack for is pretty minimal, but playing against Nekusar is indeed a headache.

^This^, so much this. I've played the deck a lot lately and the winning game plan is usually stuff their deck into their hand and boardwipe every couple of turns. Swinging with "utility creatures" actually happens more than you'd think, because I am constantly finding openings here and there. Dictate of Kruphix is totes in before the demon, but in any highlander format the key is redundancies, and in this case I am aiming to hit a critical mass of this type of effect, and being a 5/5 flier is not without value, if nothing else it helps ensure that small utility dudes keep doing their impressions of enchantments. I am more perturbed by the fact that hes vulnerable to creature kill than I am that he doesn't give me cards. After a certain point I have enough card draw going that I'm going to be fine, just so long as I have a reset button when I need it. Once you've handed everyone a certain number of "free" cards card advantage loses it's meaning. In matches with more than one opponent the deck lives in the tension of "how much advantage can I take from the nekusar player before it becomes a problem or my opponents are getting more out of it than I am?". And the hilarious part is that most people are very bad at that equation.

Change log: -wheel and deal, -1 snow-covered mountain, +steam vents, +sword of war and peace. Wheel and deal was too narrow, where as the sword is several useful effects tied together. It protects a creature from a wide variety of removal, including my own red sweepers, while
also being a repeatable sudden impact+[card]hero's reunion[/card]. I do realize that the deck is not offensive enough to utilize the sword to it's full effect, but the games where it has come up have shown me that it does more than enough. The steam vents is a pretty obvious upgrade, it replaces a mountain because lack of red mana is so rarely a problem, but blue is often a sticky point.

Updated my deck, look at the my main first post.

Took out Cryptic Command, Top, Ensnaring Bridge, Oona, Queen of the Fae, and a few others.

Added:
Crawlspace- stops Rude Awakening decks or mass armies
Fate Unravelor- Another target for Glissening Oil to abuse.
Price of Knowledge- I thought it hit me as well. It doesn't, thus I added it.
Archmage Ascension- BROKEN! recommended by a friend and love it.
Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs- Excellent defense. Another recommendation from same friend. Just poops out defenders constantly if attacking player does not have trample. This replaced Oona.

JtN additions that might be good but unsure what to pull for them. Not sure if its worth while.
Dictate of Kruphix- Extra draw is good, but do
we to much with it?
Dictate of the twin gods- IDK, seems cool but it's a double edged sword against us if opponents are well positioned for dealing damage.

The only god card that looks good for us is Erebos. The others are to slow, expensive, or not worth the investment. Not sure what to pull for it.

Lastly, Sorin 1.0 will go in this deck when I can find one for cash. Go to 10, wheal of fate, draw 3 cards, and :argh: from one poor SOB.

Dictate of the twin gods seems like it would be worse for you than most decks out there. I like furnace of wrath, but it was never even on the table for me. Even if you are playing fairly aggressively, anything more aggressive is going to shove that effect down your throat. If it were an instant or sorcery (like overblaze) I could see the argument (I still wouldn't run it but I understand the desire to experiment), but unless you are winning right after it drops you are just handing everyone the tools of your demise.

Also opened a temple of epiphany during ther prerelease so it replaces izzet guildgate. Gate may reappear if I need to make a mana adjustment (which I am thinking I do, I feel like I am not getting access to blue when needed early as often as I should, statistically the ratios are where I was aiming, but I can't
shake the feeling that another blue source might be helpful. I've been playing it a lot lately and I love how much easier it makes evaluating things when you get a lot of games in a short time so you can make smarter, more informed, more careful adjustments. I still need another wrath (eyeing exstinguish all hope), and witchbane orb will probably retire (actually I think's going into another deck).

I like furnace of wrath, but it was never even on the table for me. Even if you are playing fairly aggressively, anything more aggressive is going to shove that effect down your throat. If it were an instant or sorcery (like [card:3asdo5ce]overblaze[/card:3asdo5ce]) I could see the argument (I still wouldn't run it but I understand the desire to experiment), but unless you are winning right after it drops you are just handing everyone the tools of your demise.

Also opened a [card:3asdo5ce]temple of epiphany[/card:3asdo5ce] during ther prerelease so it replaces [card:3asdo5ce]izzet guildgate[/card:3asdo5ce]. Gate may reappear if I need to make a mana adjustment (which
I am thinking I do, I feel like I am not getting access to blue when needed early as often as I should, statistically the ratios are where I was aiming, but I can't shake the feeling that another blue source might be helpful. Anger has a double red at 3cmc, which is going to be difficult on curve, and off curve it's not all that exciting given my limited ability to throw extra damage on in the combat step, x/3s usually aren't so important to wipe, I've tested it before, and was thoroughly unimpressed, except against tokens, and even then they tend to have a number of anthems to keep them out of range,
so in it's best case its 50/50.

Massacre wurm also seems interesting, but the triple black is noisome (though much easier given that it's higher on the curve), the "damage" is also pretty low, but it seems like the second ability makes up for it. When I have a little more to invest in the deck (after acquiring what I want/need for standard) I may give it a spin.

Virtue's ruin seems pretty iffy, but getting teeg seems important (I haven't run into him in over a year, but he REALLY hurts my game), and in some matches it could be a blowout. Like every other card over $5 I am going to have to wait to give it a spin.

Evacuation should probably get a chance, especially with the hand size punishment I'm running.

Plague wind seems like a no brainer, if my LGS has a copy I'll snag it, otherwise I'll wait till I do another big singles order. It's exactly the effect I want at a semi-reasonable cost, not sure why I haven't used it yet.

@Darthstabber, I have yet to have a mana problem as I draw shit loads of cards. I also run a many mana rocks. Lands that tap for more colors are a great help as well. 3 mana of the same color are fine in my opinion, but 4 is an issue sometimes. Virtue's Ruin can be a major blowout for "White in it" decks. It also kills multi colored creatures with white in them so it's a huge bonus. Another Idea for you is red elemental blast and Blue elemental blast for mirror or decks that run control/burn.

Forbid for counterflux seemed an obvious switch, having cards to pitch to it's buyback is often trivial, plus it's cool to say "I forbid it".
The other switches weren't upgrades so much as cards that haven't lived up to their potential getting the axe for new toys to try out.

Erebos stops lifegain, which can be a giant setback for a deck that wins through incremental damage, and he's more "early" card draw. The fact that he becomes a creature is pure gravy, 5/7 indestructible gravy. Heck underworld dreams alone leaves him 1 devotion shy of animating.

Master of the feast is another howling mine with a sizable body attached, and he drops early enough to get some beats in, or keeps anything 4/5
or smaller at bay.

Finally extinguish all hope is both an awesome boardwipe that misses master of feasts and fate unraveler, and it has such an awesome name

Kind of expensive on the red one. I am generally winning or have won on turn seven. It also requires the creature go to the yard from play, not from hand. I need enchants to be deadly immediately, not conditional or require leaving play. From the hand would have been awesome.

Wash Out is OK, but it does not hit man lands if they are colorless. Also, slivers could air drop in Ghostflame sliver. Like Damnation, Plague Wind, Evacuation, and Cyclonic Rift better. If you play the; try it out and report back.
