The closest my fish ever came to mass extinction was when the tube to my external filter popped out and started pumping water out of the tank and onto the floor.

Well, not exactly onto the floor. Directly into the heating ducts. It just so happens that where the water pooled and started flowing through my basement ceiling was precisely where the downstairs fire alarm was located. It went off, I went downstairs to find a steady stream of water flowing through my fire alarm, and my fish were saved!

Fire alarms save lives.
