I don't have qualms with anything else. I understand that this is what you want to play, and nobody else is going to know it any better than yourself. Although, if I have to recommend any other changes, I'd probably yank the Burning-Trees and maindeck Satyr. But after that, then the deck starts to look more and more like my current Dragon deck, except it's splashing White for Chains instead of some Shocks.
Hmm...

Final results: 2-2

My last opponent basically told me I'm a shitty player after he whooped my ass (my plays are 'obvious'). Kinda pissed atm.

Today I played 3 times against red devo and not saying anything bad about my opponents but this deck someimes has those draws that you dont have to thinkto win. It isnt even funny sometimes :(

Maybe just play this deck as it is a truly combo deck of a format?

The nutdraws are indeed mostly unbeatable. I THINK this is the only tier deck in the format that has a turn 3 win.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Hey guys,

So I have been testing the Naya Devotion list, with a few small tweaks - I suppose i may as well post the deck. The only changes i made were to increase the number of chained to the rocks to 4, and sneak another chandra in.

[deck]
Land (24)
4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple of Triumph
4 Temple of Abandon
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4 Mountain

Creatures (25 - probably 1 light, but i couldn't find space or a creature i wanted maindeck)
4 Ash Zealot
4 Frostburn Weird
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
2 Purphoros, God of the Forge
3 Fanatic of Mogis
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalkers (5)
2 Chandra,
Pyromaster
3 Domri Rade

Desecration Demon attractors
4 Chained to the Rocks

Artifacts
2 Hammer of Purphoros

Sideboard
2 Mistcutter Hydra
2 Last Breath
1 Domri Rade
2 Xenagos, the Reveler
3 Mizzium Mortars
2 Assemble the Legion
1 Hammer of Purphoros
2 Wear
[/deck]

To hopefully prompt some discussion, here are my initial playtesting thoughts:-

1) This deck, when it works, runs so fucking sweet. You do not seem to run out of cards, and throw many and varied threats out onto the board. Domri ripping through the deck for creatures is fantastic, and the ability to throw down a domri and trade your reckoner for pretty much any creature is absolutely fantastic.
2) Hammer of Purphoros is fantastic. LIke has been said a few times around here, this guy just seems to pull games back from no where. It just seems to over perform much more often than it under performs. Not the most consistent of card, but seems to be good or great more than it is bad or blank
3) the nut draws are hilarious,
and in that respect it seems even more OP than the old gruul decks - because this one has haste and is killing you. I will go so far as to say the nut draws from this deck are the most powerful in the format - but that has been the case with red devotion decks for a while

That being said, it really isn't all rainbows:-

1) The manabase (generally). I want to play more games with this deck because I am unsure whether it is variance or the mana base. I seem to get a LOT of openers that are 1 land and a nykthos, making it unplayable. In my old red/white devotion, i played magma jet to specifically deal with this opener and allow me to keep it. That being said, I could just be dealing with variance - but my initial feeling is that if I am going to keep it at 24 lands, 3 nykthos seems to be the play. This deck feels so powerful sometimes that you dont even need your amazing ramp. If you are crazy about the 4th nykthos, I think adding the 25th land would be better than cutting a mountain.

2) The manabase
(turn 2 specifically). I have always found with devotion decks that you must have your 2 drop - either ash zealot or frostburn weird. You could sometimes go alright in RW devotion when you had magma jet to chain off BTE, but in this deck it is absolutely brutal when you miss your two drop. It is even more brutal when you open a hand of scry lands, and cant play a 2 drop until turn 3 - losing essentially an entire turn whether on the play or draw. That is the risk of playing 8 scry lands though, and you are trading the speed for more mid and late game grind

3) no removal main deck - You have to make this decision when playing this deck, but I have never been so scared of the power 2 mana drops - pack rat and Imposing Sovereign. Add to that banisher priest, and I dont think the WW matchup is as one sided as the comments in Jim Davis' article make it out to be. Both are cards that every other red deck laughs at, shocks, then moves on, but in this deck you are really worried. Imposing sovereign in particular
is a little fucker, this 2 mana drop that puts you a further turn behind, while they are beating your face in with Soldier of the pantheon.

If feels like at the moment with Red devotion you can only ever have two of these three:-
Explosiveness;
Creature Removal; or
Card advantage.

Look at the decks we have running around RW Devotion (explosiveness and creature removal), Rg Devotion (explosiveness and card advantage, but no good answer to desecration demon or master of waves), and Naya which gives you no removal and a suspicious mana base on which to rely.

I like the creature removal and card advantage more than I like the ramp - if nothing else this testing was great to show me the feel of the PyroRed Deck - which i went 8-0-1 in the last 2 FNMs.

I would love to hear what other people think of the naya deck and my analysis.
Standard: No thanks. A game based on who can curve out the best doesnt really appeal to me.
Modern: Jund. dabbling on the side with esper mentor and grixis delver. I miss treasure cruise
Legacy: Not even I hate myself that much

Deck looks solid Volition and I would recommend (if I ever play Devo again it will play it with Domri and Chandra :flame:)

I'm not going knock on devotion since I know its a good deck, I just can't play it - need my CA.

Anyhow here is the only replay I saved when I did run Rw Devo Boros Devotion Experiment (2 Man) G1 vs Rg Devotion you may notice I had a line of play where I could have just attack but I didn't since I wanted to go big with Mogis (silly stuff like that makes 'me' bad at the deck rather then the deck itself being bad).

Thanks MDU - the domri version is really fantastic, when it works.

That second game in your video shows exactly what happens when i play RW devotion - you will get into a great position, run out of steam, then they will play like scavenging ooze and you will just have no way to finish them off. Burning tree emissary is fantastic for tempo and enabling explosive devotion, but a terrible card from a card advantage point of view. When you are behind, that 2/2 body really isnt worth much.

I am enjoying the PyroRed deck at the moment, even the games i seem to lose feel close and that if only a few cards drawn in the wrong order that throw me out. And all the doom blades and cheap black removal running around means that the worst matchup (gruul devotion or massive GR beats) are not that prevalent. Card advantage feels like it gives me so many more lines to take which can affect the result in the game - which is probably terrible given that i
make bad bad mistakes.

LP, What's your cockatrice name? I am on there a fair bit (as i have a young baby, I dont get to test that much with my group in real life) - would be keen to do some testing if you are around

Trice name, Laki. I'm on weird hours and may or may not be on this weekend, but I'll definitely test with you whenever we're on at the same time.

Also, won a 1k/GPT/Platinum invitational this weekend with RW devotion. FInals was a mirror match and we where each others only losses in the tournament. Top 8 was 2 R/w Devotion, 1 R/g devotion, 1 GW aggro, 1 Orzhov humans, 1 UW control, 2 U devotion.

My buddy Travis was the R/g devotion deck and suggested to me that the R/g deck was superior which I'm not inclined to believe since I've played that deck, but he was playing 2 mistcutters and Ruric-thars main along with the 4 skylasher board to hose U decks. Looking at my results over the past 2 tourneys, I'd say Rw devotion is the way to go.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Has your list changed at all, LP? I am willing to spend my christmas/newyear's eve money on this deck since I've already had the chance to give it a spin (a friend of mine plays it) and it was a blast to play.

Ok after playing rakdos agro and loving that deck can we discuss rakdos devotion?

Important part of the deck is access for rakdos's return, black also gives you solid removal for master that doeant need mountains and is instant speed.

Or is it just not worth it as assemble and boros charm (if it is only for damage then toil/trouble can be replacement especially with nykthos) is so important?
I'd go R/b devotion and have the b just be a small splash for cards like Rakdos's Return, Dreadbore, and pick your poison of: Ultimate Price, Doom Blade, Dark Betrayal, Devour Flesh. So maybe something like this:

[deck]
Creatures - 30
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Ash Zealot
4 Burning Tree Emissary
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Fanatic of Mogis
4
Stormbreath Dragon
2 Purphoros, God of the Forge

Spells - 6
4 Dreadbore
2 Rakdos's Return

Land - 24
4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4 Blood Crypt
4 Temple of Silence
12 Mountain

Sideboard - 15
4 Mizzium Mortars
4 Ultimate Price
4 Skullcrack
3 Dark Betrayal
[/deck]

That sideboard is crap and really just placeholders, but that sorta thing would probably be my starting point if you want to do a R/b devotion list right now before the R/B scrylands hit with the next set. Temple of Silence is in there because it gives you extra black sources that can tap for Boros Reckoner, and it lets you get in a scry land. EDIT: However, that puts you at only 16 purely red sources for Zealot/BTE/Dragon, and 20 R/W sources for Reckoner. Access to Nykthos helps, but the mana may just be crap.

Various Tourney Reports

Postby LP, of the Fires » Mon Dec 30, 2013 4:28 am

SCG IQ, last weekend.

Round 1, vs. Orzhov humans. I could go into detail, but I mulled into oblivion game 2 and drew and cast 5 stormbreath dragons in the other 2 games vs. his mostly white deck.

1-0.

Round 2, vs. Mono-black. Nutdraw on the play vs. bad 2 card hand. Game 2, get double thoughtseized, top deck purphoros, top deck assemble the legion. Snap concession.

2-0.

Round 3, Vidi in the mirror. Vidi has played in the last 5 pro tours, has won at least one open and has done well in plenty of high level events. Expected this matchup to be tough, especially considering this was my first time playing this deck. In actuality what happened was Vidi's a blue player also playing this deck for the first time and I know what the cards do way better. HE nutdraws me on the play game 1 and gets me to 5ish life with a fanatic. I play 2 frostburn weirds off of nykthos powered up
by ash zealot and BTE. he swings for 1, I chump and untap, cast boros reckoner and a mortars on a weird and swing with ash zealot. He untaps, alphas, and boros reckoner two for zeros him by blocking an ash zealot and redirecting to mogis before normal combat damage. Stuff happens for x turns including my drawing another weird to chump until I eventually draw Stormbreath on my last turn for the win. Game 2, mull to oblivion and die. Game 3, Double mogis gets there. Again, his inexperience with red decks shows as he cast a dragon and tried to race me with it when He had warleaders helix and 2 chains in hand.

3-0.

Round 4, BW control. My opponents deck played bad cards, he was bad, and I lost to 20 doom blades>Elspeth. Tilt.

3-1.

Round 5, pseudo mirror. His deck had Legions initiative and Chandra's which was cute, but he drew terribly and lost both games mulliganing 3 times total.

4-1.

Round 6, vs. Travis Boese. Travis is a good friend of mine and also a CFB writer. He says I'm
his biggest fan(in the states). He's on mono-black and despite being stuck on 2 lands most of the game nearly comes back and wins. Game 2, mull to 5, get destroyed. Game 3, I misplay by chaining a pack rat on turn 2 when I KNEW he just planned on blocking with it. Game goes back and forth for a bit until he chains a demon into a gary into a demon. Luckily, I was able to get him to 4 and boros charm off the top got there.

5-1.

Round 7 me and my opponent drew and since I hadn't had anything to eat all day and my ride was still playing for prizes, I asked him for a ride to wendys(venue was in the middle of nowhere). He was on naya hexproof and said the matchup was terrible for me.

5-1-1 top 8.

Quaterfinals. Not worth talking about. Opponent was mono-black and SUPER serious. I hadn't set goals for the tourney other then to have fun and top 8 felt really good so I was satisfied and played terribly. We just got our decks back from the deck check and since it was sorted for
that, I didn't shuffle thoroughly enough to randomize. Opening sevn: 6 lands BTE. Mull. Six card hand, 5 lands BTE. Tilt, keep. Turn 1 thoughtseize=loss. Game 2, I misplayed on turn 2 which cost me the game. My opener had temple, temple, mountain, nykthos requiring tricky sequencing of lands depending on what I wanted to do. I play temple seeing cackler and keep. ON turn 2, I can go BTE, cackler, pass, or cackler, temple pass. For some reason, I went cackler temple which was a mistake and cost me the game. Before my opponent stabilized, he was at 2 life and if I had taken the other line, I probably get there and force a game 3.

5th-8th place =(
Saturday, TCG Platinum 1k/Sacremento GPT.

Friday night, played FNM, went 3-1 losing to my teammate on UW control in the finals, then headed back to the house to playtest(horrible idea, but my ritual). Jammed games against orzhov humans all night while drinking and tried talking my friend to switch decks
with me until I passed out at 5 in the morning. He ended up staying up all night and on the way there we discussed wether we should switch decks or if he should play orzhov humans or the esper midrange list. Up to deck registration, we decided to stick with our decks, UW control, R/w devotion, and Orzhov humans. Dan asked me after righting four soldier of the pantheon if he should run esper midrange or orzhov agro. I told him to just play the orzhov deck with an extra profit loss in the board for the mirror. He listened and we both top 8'd in 2nd and 8th place respectively(more later).

I'll abbreviate this report with none of my opponents where particularly good other then once again Travis ProEasy who I had to play twice. Quick run down till we get to Travis.

Round 1, RG monsters.

1-0(2-1)

Round 2,

2-0(2-1)

Round 3, Esper Midrange

3-0(2-1)

Round 4, Prophet Bant. This round sleep deprivation set in and I couldn't stop talking. I literally
lost game 2 because I kept saying how awesome it was that I could bluff boros charm, then I passed the turn without playing my hammer. Feels bad.

4-0(2-1)

Round 5, Mirror. Win game 1(opponents first loss of the day). Game 2, Misplayed. There was a game state where I was behind and I had the option of either double frostburn weird, or boros reckoner. I played reckoner which was dumb because I had a second nykthos in hand and I had a chained to the rocks with no white mana. If I go double weird, I have blockers for whatever and if he removes one of my guys, since I have 8 devotion, on the next turn, I'm free to nykthos for six mana, cast reckoner, cast second nykthos, and use it for white mana to chain his reckoner. Instead I cast reckoner and it got chained. I was rightfully punished and lost game 3 marking my first loss in the mirror.

4-1(1-2)

Round 5, Travis Boese in the pseudo mirror. Travis was on G/r devotion which he insists is better and I haven't picked his
brain on why other then domri's awesome. His was actually the first version of RG I built before I decided to forgoe the mono-blue matchup and focus on walkers. His list had 2 maindeck mistcutters, 2 maindeck ruric thars, and 4 skylashers in the board. He was pretty tilted to play against me again for a win and in(I was probably the second best player in the room) but our matches are always fun. I don't remember these matches well other then he had nutdraws and I had answers while grindy damage with the 'ol double rakdos cackler incremental beats plan.

5-1(2-?)

Normally at x-1, you can scoop into top 8, but somehow I got paired down to 7th place and my opponent in 8th couldn't draw. This worked out for travis who needed to win his last round and for me to dream crush in order to top 8 and I was thinking about doing it anyways cause I am indeed his biggest fan(nigga's blind for fucks sake).

Round 7, Orzhov control. Game 1, he's on the play, stalls on
three lands at the wrong time, then draws his 4th on 5 and casts....desecration demon. Never good enough when you're behind on board. game 2, I mull to six, he keeps a fine hand, disrupts my hand including duressing an assemble the legion, but again only has 3 lands. He has a pack rat however which makes the game close. He's at 4, I'm at something that loses to him having a removal spell and drawing a land next turn with my board of double reckoner, golem token, active hammer. I'm missing a detail, but I know if I alpha, and he kills something, I lose. Instead, I draw mortars, overload it and he scoops.

6-1 top 8, second seed. This same round, my buddy was also x-1 in good position to top 8, but his opponent was x-0-1 and wanted to play for seeding purposes since he was guaranteed. top 8 either way. He beat my friend and he tilted, but he still ended up top 8ing in eight place. Travis also top 8'd in seventh place meaning me and him would play in the quarter finals with me on the play.

Quaterfinals: Travis Broese.

Game 1, is not particularly close. I drew two reckoners. GROSS.

Game 2, I decide to board out a hammer on the draw since I know he brings in revelry and Chain is a blowout I can at least play around most of the time(I don't lose my turn at least casting chain and I don't want to play hammer...ever really game 2 unless I'm already winning or super flooded late game. Game 2, he keeps the mountain, nykthos hand and misses for two turns but has a mortars to stem the bleeding and eventually plays burning tree weird at a healthy life total followed up by a whiffing domri. Normally fighting is better here, but he had nykthos while I didn't so his devotion is much more important and while behind on life with board presence, it makes more sense for him to try and grind CA. Unfortunately for him, I do something broken like chain, mortars, mogis you, kill your domir with my hasted mogis from this one hammer that I kept in. He slowly rebuilds and casts 2
defensive stormbreath dragons and I naturally top-deck mogis for the win.

2-0.

Semi-Finals I played the other player who beat travis on R/G agro. Game 1, I misplayed on turn whatever by playing BTE/Mogis instead of Purphoros which bit me in the ass 4/5 turns later when I had an Alpha attack that would only take my opponent to 1. I lost in a ridiculously stalled out board when my opponent finally drew charm for my purphoros and realized his 9 creatures where better then my now 3. Being slightly flooded didn't help, but it wouldn't have mattered if I played better. Justifiably punished. Games 2 and 3, I remembered he was playing selesnya and I was the better player and the universe agreed that it was my turn to win. I was also getting delirous from lack of sleep and made a couple of sleep deprived misplays.

2-1.

Finals. Tl;dr, prize split. Play for plaque. Win. I'm a champion bitches along with being some 300$ and some GP byes richer.
Today, Foily tourney.

Local
tourney with 14 or something people. 4 rounds.

Round 1, idk, crushed some bad esper deck.

Round 2, idk, crushed the mirror.

Round 3, 2 land, do nothing hands from my oppoenents? Sure. BUG deck decided to keep all black removal hand on the play with zero swamps.

Round 4, mono-black, decent player, didn't matter. 2-1 and up 1 foil sheet of m14 uncommons. Prize also included 10 packs. Decided to crack some m14 for a mutavault. Got there on the 4th pack. 30 dollar card and credit>just 30 dollars credit. VALUE.

Foil M14 uncommons....

Isn't foil YP$ like LOLGGPROFIT atm? >_>

Also I'm not sure how Naya Hexproof is a terrible MU... surprised he even made it that far with all the devour fleshed that are being rocked. SUper confidence in his deck I guess <.<

Its like Bant hexproof versus Kibler Gruul last season... except you can do even MORE damage than that deck

there lifegain means shit. If you don't interact with a Red devotion deck expect to get 30'd

At my local store, there is a player who plays monoblack splashing white for blood baron and some sideboarding options (that he doesn't bring in against me). My problem is, following Erik Smith's decklist and sideboarding plan (-4 Dragon, -2 Weird, -2 Mortars +2 CTTR +2 Assemble +4 Firedrinker Satyr), I have no answer to blood baron. Would it be correct to play a 2/2 split between chain and mortars? Do I want to play more than 4 removal spells? Help please.

[deck[
Creatures
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Ash Zealot
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Firefist Striker
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Fanatic of Mogis
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager

Spells
4 Lightning Strike
2 Shock

Hammer
1 Hammer of Purphoros

Land
4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple of Abandon
2 Temple Garden
11 Mountain

Sideboard
3 Gruul Charm
4 Mizzium Mortars
2 Chandra, Pyromaster
1 Hammer of Purphoros
2 Traitorous Instinct
3 Skullcrack
[/deck]

cards subject to change:

1 Fanatic of Mogis, 1 hammer in main can become any combination of land/shock/something spicy 2 traitorous instinct in the board can become 2 act of treason as mana tightness is relevant in this deck.

3 Gruul charms in the board can probably be anything else, but they'
re really good vs. Devotion Blue. You can even get your domesticated reckoner back!

Board plans:

Vs. Aggro/pseudo mirror: - 4 firedrinker satyr, -4 cackler, + 4 mortars, +2 Chandra, +2 traitorous instinct

Vs. Blue Devotion: -8 1 drops, -1 hammer, + 4 mortars, +2 Chandra, + 3 gruul charm.

Vs. UW/x Control: -4 boros reckoner, -2 shock, + 2 Chandra, +3 skullcrack, +1 hammer. You can also experiment with cutting ghor-clan.

Vs. B/x Thoughtseize/Hero's Downfall/Desecration demon deck: -2 shock, -1 fanatic of mogis, +2 traitorous instinct, +1 hammer.

Vs. Colossol Gruul: Idk, play it by ear. Firedrinker satyr is bad, cackler is usually bad, mortars are always good, instinct should be good, but non of there guys trample, Chandra, can be good to great or not do anything, gruul charm seems fine, though I'd bring in 2 max. This applies for basically all green decks actually. Against the Gruul agro deck jon stern used, instinct is a lot better because he plays dragons.
Any thoughts
on whether something like this is any good right now? Even the aggro decks (primary being R/w Devotion and Master of Waves) are running slightly more "mid-range" in feel and turns to win - does this go faster but keep the consistency? Or do its creatures get outclassed too early?

So I'm going to try out Eric Smith's list with the small adjustment of -1 Stormbreath +1 Legion's Initiative. Control has made a huge return in my meta, and I want to test out how well it does since it keeps things out of Last Breath's range, helps me deal extra damage without over extending, makes Jace's +1 useless against ATL, and saves my creatures from mass removals. If it does really well I might take out a FBW for another one.

I played that list (+/1 w/e) at the start of the meta raspy... The problem was (back in those days with everyone running around on DEGA and late-game deck stuffs) was LITERALYL the mana base.

All the cards are great and i love me a rampager, but the temples hurt more than they help in the deck because you're trying to curve out (unlikes Pyrorakis builds where you can play a tempo/control game and scrying is very relevant).

Its not aggressive enough to be worth playing LP's other deck of R/g Devotion which does broken unfair things for sacrificing a little bit of speed in the 1-drops and rampager.

For those interested in R/b Devotion, look at what Kevin Crimin did over at GatheringMagic.

http://www.gatheringmagic.com/kevin-crm ... to-rakdos/

He has a few videos and talks about why black rather than white and how his thoughts changed about cards to keep and add.

I think the one thing I liked in this list is the Tymaret. It's something I wouldn't have thought about adding into devotion.

EDIT: Without thinking too much into it, I would just -4 RSF +4 Cackler, -2 Dreadbore +1 Hammer +1 Ultimate Price.

EDIT2: Going to try figuring out a sideboard.
Early draft:

[deck]
4 Spike Jester
3 Rakdos Charm
2 Dark Betrayal
2 Mizzium Mortars
2 Ultimate Price
2 Chandra, Thunder Thighs[/deck]

Spike Jester was my choice over Satyr since it can attack in for 3 right away. I almost put in Shred-Freak for devo purposes, but I realized the extra damage will be worth it more. I was also thinking of Toil//Trouble instead of Chandra, but maybe it's unnecessary since I have 4 Returns in the MB already, although I could be wrong since the card draw could be worth it too. Thoughts?

I like the inclusion of Ultimate Price TB, cuz the original list had no way of dealing with MoW which seems awful to me

So, R/B devotion gives you a better matchup vs control but I'm confused as to what it's good for otherwise

Yeah the Ultimate Price was for MoW and still hit other threats in other decks that Dreadbore could have killed. I think I'd rather play Stormbreath than Cerberus for now also.

R/B seems to have a better matchup against MUD also, and I haven't tried against anything else for now. I imagine Mono Black can be easier too with access to Dark Betrayal and our own black creatures.

I don't want to bother messing with it right now though. Spoiler season is coming up and I'll wait until we see what we're getting.

A deck by Lauphiette "Mogi-Killah" Kincey.

Delivered the ole Stormbreath Stunnah, eh?

So I was looking up RW Devo decklists for a srs deck to play, clicked on a tcgplayer link on my FB feed, and thought "Hey, why does Lauphiette Kincey sound familiar..."

Dunno if I want to run LP's list or a more common list. I dunno, Satyr in the board seems weird to me. :s gonna do some quick sifting through this thread since I've been on mostly pyrowhite this season.

[Edit] Think I'm running Ari's list. Might change out a Helix in the board for a Last Breath or 3rd Assemble, and probably running 2 Chandra/1 Purph instead of the opposite.

Good job, as expected. :D

Which decks do you side in the Chandra for? I'm still using the second Last Breath.

I love everything about that list.
Looks tuned, clean, and efficient.

Also curious if the Last Breath and the Chandra are just interchangeable?

Props on the win! How'd the mirror match in the finals go? I assume it comes down to who's on the play twice, and Reckoner?

So I've just finished 4-2 at FNM tonight with Erik Smith's list with my two losses due to mana screw/flood. I only had one match that was a legit win against me when I got blown out by not one, but TWO overloaded Cyclonic Rifts against me in the same game. Some thoughts:

- The one match I got to play Legion's Initiative was fairly good. My Cacklers and Emmy were 3/2s staring at 3 toughness creatures so it put some pressure on.
- I didn't care for Purphoros himself. He didn't do squat whenever I brought him out. There were times I stared at him wishing it was Chandra.
- Assemble the Legion won me a gain against UW Control. It's my favorite card in the sideboard. It never took off against UG Devo because of Cyclonic Rift.
- Cacklers and Satyr in the sideboard were the reasons why I won against Mono B and UW Control. The one drops are CRUCIAL.
- Finishing 9th SUCKS when most of your opponents dropped, especially the
good players that could have help your tiebreakers.

I'm fairly tempted to try the Rakdos version for Return, but I'm sticking with this. Considering I mostly lost due to mana problems is a testament how good it is. The only changes is maybe replacing Purp for Chandra.

Went 5:0:1, won ten packs and a promo, with Ari's list w/
-1 Purphoros, +1 Chandra MD
-1 Assemble, +1 Last Breath SB (both stores sold out... More mono U than B or control at this store anyway)

Love the deck so much. Seems absurdly powerful.

I have to ask, as I've tried the deck - Eric's list - do any of you get a lot of horrible hands? I'm thinking Purphoros, 2 Dragons, Reckoner, Temple, Nykthos, BTE kinda thing. I get these at least half the time and if I didn't keep hearing such good things about the deck I'd have given it up as a terrible build! Is this just an extreme case of variance or am I missing something?

Yeah, those are terrible hands and that's extreme variance.

I was something like 1-7 vs. JS in testing with random builds, then played my boros devotion deck and went 6-0 playing things like turn 3 stormbreath dragon and such.
