Some advice, from a lowly inf. grinder.

If your under budget constants, its usually better to pick a cheaper deck (like AiR, AiR is a freaken good underrated deck btw) then it is to half purchase a deck.

That said FNM level events should be ok...
So you're saying the deck will not perform well unless I have the full four copies of mutavault? Kinda confused here...

edit: I'm only under budget restrictions as far as buying cards goes, which means I just need to find someone to trade with (got lots of trades). Which, admittedly has taken me quite a while.

Well done nonetheless. Thank you again for your tireless work and contributions. Ended up being a very profitable season for you?
Just under 2000, not sure how next season will go with no more DEs.
Wow nice, 2k $? wow, how many dailys did you play to achieve that?

@Tyrael: I'll keep it simple, yes - I think the deck is worst without the vaults and walkers against a control dominated meta. (Does that mean you won't win? no, but your not doing yourself any favors)

@Pedros: I started S11 with a really expensive horrible deck which I sold, and since I don't count S12 (its been ruined) I added the profits farming the QP towards that to S11 pile.

I'd echo running AiR build if on a budget, it's very good (and I pick that style every now and then as a wake up call to my playgroup if I ever feel they're gettig soft to it ;) .

Beginning my travel to this big tournament (my good friend top 8ed today vs 309 other players which was awesome), and will glance around the other decks and buy 2x Eruption if I really feel I need it. Otherwise try and track down the Master Rod.

I'd suggest giving Boss Sligh http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/8505 a try if you are thinking of running AIR. It's fun to play, competitive and costs $25 to build! :)

EDIT - This may be better :) http://community.ist.utl.pt/viewtopic.p ... 99#p142499

Explanation:
MonoBlack Devotion is not a deck which cares about minor damage, 1900+ Grinders are still willing to Thought Seize and Underworld Connection your face. Two damage spells do not really serve any purpose beside triggering Pyro or Phoenix, I'll much rather overload the players and stick an active Chandra, Pyromaster for the win - this is much easier to complete with the full set of creatures.

Explanation
I prefer Shock over YP$ here because with Jace and Sweepers running around Young Pyromancer acts more like an expensive 2cc bear with Shock you can at least “save” Chandra’s Phoenix from D.S or bring him back, but you can removal those as well if you need space.

Mizzium Mortars is your backup plan when things go wrong since Esper tends to run 03x Barons as an answer against
MonoBlack Devotion - Mortars when overloaded can also deal with tokens.

Explanation:
Most Aggro list run creatures which quickly outclass Rakdos Cackler and Firedrinker Satyr making them poor choices G2 and G3, you’re the control list here so removal is your friend however even with all the removal you pack sometimes it is not enough thus stall states occur very often which is why the Plan B Fanatic of Mogis is in place – combined with Boros Reckoner you can often hit for 4+ with ease.

Explanation:
Your 1 drops all get outclassed on T2, you need to spend the first few turns cleaning out manadorks.
Ash is similarly outclassed on T2 however she is critical in the stall wall game plan, in the past I would cut YP$ and Chandra here (for SC) but the newer list are running more Soozes less
disciples and less gods.
Thus YP$ helps buy more time for build up a big FoM or ultimate Chandra.

Have seen game 1 only. however I dont really understand this line of play.

You shocked Owl to overload mortars next turn. I left him with master and thassa next turn while you were tapped down. After this line of play, any future master of waves arent solved by chained to the rocks. Also he didnt commint a lot of resources to mortars (bascily it was mortars for tokens only).

Why not shock phoenix (still take down devotion from thassa preventing it from attacking you), next turn chain master (to get rid of it) and pass a turn with mortars in hand? Next turn you would 2 or 3 for 1 him with overload mortars.

I needed to chain his Thassa, since she was the largest threat (both in a scry and unblockable PoV) - I don't really care about my life
total until it goes under 1, but my plan failed when he hit another MoW (it happens).

I do many odd things when its 6:00 AM in the morning, though I still believe it was the correct line of play even though hindsight shows a diff. view.

Started watching, really like the live play videos. Allows me to see how you think much clearer without needing to go back and forth in the video, heh. Maybe this will be answered as I get through the rest of the videos, but how did you like SBD? Felt good in the deck?

He is so good, I built a deck centered on him in the Big Boros Thread.

Just some warning, I was rather tilted during G1-3, but learning what not to do is good as well I guess.

I manage to wake-up after G3...

I probably know your answer to this, but think you could have played better through out the entire tournament to possibly take a better placing? Still have faith in the build and the deck? Or looking towards something different going forward into the new season?

Thanks for the advice.

Sorry I've been AWOL. Went 2-1 at FNM.

Round 1 VS GerryT's B/R control.

Game 1: I stomped.

Game 2: Was really grindy, but he eventually got me.

Game 3: Mull to 5 into mana-screw... I have never beat this guy, and I've been losing since this guy beat me in the finals of game day, whereas I was winning everything prior to him coming to my LGS. I'm convinced this guy is a witch and has vexed me. I have to beat him to break the curse.

0-1-0

Round 2 VS W/r Boros Aggro

Game 1: Burn everything, stabilize, beat down.

Game 2: Make a million YP$ tokens, stabilize, over the top with Phoenixes.

(very favourable match up)

1-1-0

Round 3 VS U/W Control.

Game 1: Just get him.

Game 2: He grinds me out and lands Elspeth, Archangel and Aetherling just to rub things in.

Game 3: I curve perfectly with Raki Cacki > Zealot > Phoenix > Chandra > Dragon. He can't answer me.

Nice to beat him after his scum-baggery at the GPT. Feel a little bit vindicated.

2-1-0

Deck feels really solid. Looking forward to playing it more.

What I noticed most decks in this threads evolved to the point, that they are extremely similar to each other.

Here a lot of people tried 1-2 dragons between MB and SB with MD young pyromancers.
In big boros thread people played 2-3 dragons MB with SB young pyromancers.

And a lot of people played similar 1-offs between MB and SB in:

Mostly mb:
Titan's Strenght
Pyrewild Shaman
Flames of the Firebrand

Mostly sb:
Last Breath
Rod of Ruins

Shell is extremely similar:

MB:

4 Mutavault
11-12 Mountain
8 Boros Dual Land

4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Ash Zealot
4 Chandra Phoenix
3 Chandra, Pyromaster

2 Chained to the Rocks
3 Shocks
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet

2 out of 3 MB flex slot from above

and in SB:

3 Skullcrack
4 Reckoner
2 Mizzium Mortars
2 Chained to the Rocks

1-2 flex SB slots from above

Core of the deck (sth like 50-54 cards + ~10 sb) is same in almost
every deck we have posted in competitive sub-forum.

Sth to think off - should we play 1 off Boros Guildgate? I know it is bad, however I really dont like being white-screwed, and 8 sources makes chained not as consistent as it should be. This would be extremely good in Big Boros deck MDU posted in Big Boros thread - then it would be possible to sb out Guildage + dragons for pyromancers.

Went 0-3 drop at the 2k, played mediocrely and couldn't find keepable hands. Lost 2-1 Dega (1 mana from killing him g3), 2-1 loss mono U (mulligan to oblivion g3) and lost B/R 2-0. Maybe more to come after I've slept, though fon't know how much I can say. Never drew Pyrewild once. There's still a ton of Esper/black/white weenie being played but failing to get those matchups ever. Friend took it down 1st place at least.

Before you get the thread back, make sure to thank the first post, since, when you do, you will have thanked your own post. I was hoping for this honor to be mine, but everyone else (even many of our newer members) seems to have dedicated much more time to mastering Pyro Red than I have, so I doubt I'll ever get the thread back (hell, I'd bet that a lot of the guys here never even knew I started it the first place).

Oh and MDU, could I ask you to add Yarpus' "you play control, except you deal damage" quip from Sally to the primer in bold, red letters? I feel like it fits this deck very well.

So just got back from SCG IQ where I took 1st place with Walter White! Thanks to everyone on these forums who made it possible. Ill post more in depth match notes tomorrow.

Here is what I ran:

[deck]
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Firedrinker Satyr

3 Young Pyromancer
4 Chandra's Pheonix
1 Pyrewild Shaman
1 Stormbreath Dragon

2 Chained to the Rocks
1 Flames of the Firebrand

12 Mountain
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
3 Mutavault

Sideboard
4 Boros Reckoner
2 Fanatic of Mogis
2 Mizzium Mortars
2 Chained to the Rocks
1 Rod of Ruin
3 Skullcrack
1 Stormbreath Dragon[/deck]

R1: Big Boros (2-1)

R2: AiR (2-1)

R3: Naya Control (2-0)

R4: Esper (2-0)

R5 and R6: ID

4-0-2 going into top 8 as 5th seed
-----------
Top 8 was: 1 esper, 1 mono black, 1 jund, 1 mono blue, 1 dega, 2 gw and me
------------
nR1 Top 8: GW Aggro (2-0)
<3 Chandra

R2 Top 8: Jund (2-0)

Finals: The guy didn't want the IQ invite, so we decided to split prizes giving me the victory. He was playing Mono B, which I like the matchup, but I figure why not just take $125, 12 packs and IQ Invite.

More details to come tomorrow.

Thanks everyone who has been contributing to this thread, special thanks Raida for sticking around and providing moral support to a fellow RedBro.

Im stoked, now just to learn legacy and find a deck for the Invitational in Charlotte at the end of March. Legacy Burn!!!

I've been spending some time going over the hyperbolic distribution tables here: viewtopic.php?f=92&t=845

Disclaimer: I am in no way a math expert. It has been many years since I took my last math class. If you think you're better at math then me, then please double check my work and let me know where I messed up.

The correct land count, with a single Stormbreath Dragon in the 75 is 22.

Your chance of drawing a SBD by turn 5 is 18.3% on the play.

The chance of the deck hitting it's first 5 land drops is 36.7% for 22 lands and 41.% for 23 lands both while on the play.

Since these events are dependent the probability of both occurring is gained from multiplication.

.183 x .367 = 6.7% of the time with 22 lands.
.183 x .41 = 7.5%
of the time with 23 lands.

This is the chance to get both SBD and 5 lands in the first 5 turns while on the play. Granted the percentages are slightly better if on the draw.
What's surprising about this table is what happens between the "low aggro" land count of 22 and the "accepted" land counts of 24, especially around turn 5. With a 22 land deck, you'll see that 5th land on turn 5 36.7% of the time, or roughly once in 3 games. With a 24 land deck, you'll see that 5th land 46.7% of the time, or roughly once every other game. This is a big difference from a consistency perspective, so please consider how many land you run carefully.
On 23 lands you have a 41% chance to curve out into the dragon, but your chance of drawing the dragon is much lower. Rounding like in the above comment, you'll only see Dragon by turn 5 in less then 1/5th of your games, but by adding the extra land for the 1 of sideboard crd you're gaining less then a 1% chance of
both occurring.

The chance to see the single SBD goes up to 25% by turn 9, but at that point you'd have draw 8 cards from your deck and kept you're 7 card opening meaning you'd have seen 15 cards. To not have 5 lands by this point would be a case of drawing more then 2 spells per each land and which I assume would have probably resulted in a win anyway, because you drew 11 spells and 4 lands.

Granted Theros standard has been kind to red mages with the (re)printing of Magma Jet and scry lands to help fix land counts.

@Purp. I literally just sleeved up that exact list 2 minutes before I saw your post. Congratulations on the win.

My math showed that if you play 2 SBD's; 1 main 1 board, you do want 23 lands because it raises the chance of both hitting 5 lands drops and seeing a SBD by turn 5 by like 1.5% in game 2 and 3.

Question: Can I get some opinions on Fanatic of Mogis as a sideboard card? I haven't had the opportunity to test it yet. I was running a
Flames of the Firebrand and a Last Breath SB for Mono U and Aggro, but Mono U is dying in my meta and the aggro matchup is already very solid. What do you think of FoM in the SB?

So just got back from SCG IQ where I took 1st place with Walter White! Thanks to everyone on these forums who made it possible. Ill post more in depth match notes tomorrow.

1 Flames of the Firebrand

12 Mountain
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
3 Mutavault

Sideboard
4 Boros Reckoner
2 Fanatic of Mogis
2 Mizzium Mortars
2 Chained to the Rocks
1 Rod of Ruin
3 Skullcrack
1 Stormbreath Dragon[/deck]

R1: Big Boros (2-1)

R2: AiR (2-1)

R3: Naya Control (2-0)

R4:
Esper (2-0)

R5 and R6: ID

4-0-2 going into top 8 as 5th seed
-----------
Top 8 was: 1 esper, 1 mono black, 1 jund, 1 mono blue, 1 dega, 2 gw and me
------------
R1 Top 8: GW Aggro (2-0)

How were you SBing? Sorry, I'm just curious when you thought 2 SBD/2 Fanatic was necessary. Not that they aren't, I completely see their value. Were you using the Fanatics like MDU would use them? As Guttler mentioned at the end of his post, an
opinion on it would be great. Btw, awesome job!!

Well done Purp! :)

@ Guttler - FoM was MDU's idea originally and he's ran it consistently; if you check his MOCS 11 vids and SB plan you can see when he brings it in. It's a strong card and I run it too but I've not drawn it more than a couple of times, just variance I guess :)

MOCS11- Rematch LIVE VIDEOS

/.../

If you like my videos and sideboard notes let me know (it helps feed my inflated ego :D) but sers. comments, likes and/or sub the videos, this will help me heaps since I'm now a YouTube partner.
These videos are brilliant. To often magic videos are way to slow paced, but you cut right through to the essentials and illustrate succintly how your deck works vs various opposition. What more could we ask? :teach:

In comparison, walls of text theory looks and reads nice, but heightens the understanding by a much lesser margin. I often
find myself trawling through the stuff to find the points I am after. A 11 minutes video covers saidf point and twenty other points to boot!

@Purp, that list is pretty nuts btw. I just went 12-1 online with it, facing only against 3 non-competitive decks. SBD is some serious shit when you can also flood the field with YP. I was completely murdered by GR Ramp though :(

No one reads my SB plans

FoM is the king of stall games, he is for our two worst MUs Gx Devotion and MonoU Devotion.

Both these decks have ways of generating huge amounts of CA through walkers, artifacts or gods so its difficult to just control them, with FoM you have a way to inflict upwards to 7+ damage while maintaining the control and stall wall.

You just need practice, when I first fought Gx devotion I had a 30% win ratio - now I havn't lost to Gx in weeks.

Oh, I saw that you tried to incorporate my suggestion, but didn't quite know what to say. It was Yarpus' sig on Sally for the longest time (Idk if it still is. I haven't been back there are in months except for the edh forums) and it was very smart. Does anyone here remember the exact wording, or know if he still uses it?

Congrats, Purp!

Seconded on imploring that you not play Burn in Legacy. It is very poorly positioned right now and there are also a lot more fun things you could be doing in the format.

If you're looking for a deck to build (you mentioned someone possibly loaning you a deck) you can build a budget storm deck for cheap. It won't be quite as consistent as ANT but would still be far more competitive than burn and it would even cost less.

Sideboard
4 Boros Reckoner
2 Fanatic of Mogis
2 Mizzium Mortars
2 Chained to the Rocks
1 Rod of Ruin
3 Skullcrack
1 Stormbreath Dragon[/deck]

R1: Big Boros (2-1)

R2: AiR (2-1)

R3:
Naya Control (2-0)

R4: Esper (2-0)

R5 and R6: ID

4-0-2 going into top 8 as 5th seed
-----------
Top 8 was: 1 esper, 1 mono black, 1 jund, 1 mono blue, 1 dega, 2 gw and me
------------
R1 Top 8: GW Aggro (2-0)
<3 Chandra

R2 Top 8: Jund (2-0)

Finals: The guy didn't want the IQ invite, so we decided to split prizes giving me the victory. He was playing Mono B, which I like the matchup, but I figure why not just take $125, 12 packs and IQ Invite.

Im stoked, now just to learn legacy and find a deck for the Invitational in Charlotte at the end of March. Legacy Burn!!!
So here are some round reports, I feel I owe it to everyone to be as thorough as possible since a lot of match reports have helped me.

R1 Chris on Big Boros:

G1 (
play): He stabilizes with us both at 5 life(I got flooded), plays stormbreath into stormbreath. 0-1

SB: +4 Reckoner, +2 Fanatic, +2 Chained, +2 Mizzium, +1 Stormbreath
-8 1 drops,-3 YP$

G2 (play): I notices he's having mana trouble so I unload my hand and win in 5 turns. I wait until turn 4 to play my phoenix, forcing him to cast Anger which allowed me to shock my own Phoenix... the plays. 1-1

G3 (draw): Hes at 7, I EoT LS him to 4, then play stormbreath and fly over his ember swallowers 2-1

Tourney: 1-0

After notes: Whenever I had a fanatic in my hand, I would play a line that would allow to do the most possible burst on turn 4. Sometimes just dropping it for 3 or 4 puts a lot of pressure. Swinging Phoenix into his Stormbreaths and then FotF to kill and recur happened in both G1 and G3.

R2 Jose on AiR:

G1 (play): I keep a hand full of removal and just own him. 1-0

SB: +2 Mizzium, +4 Reckoner, +2 Chained
-7 1-Drops(kept in a cackler), -1 Pyrewild

G2 (draw): He plays,
Denizen, turn 2 Bte-Bte-FFS. FoTF couldn't handle it. 1-1

G3 (draw): He had pressure on me early, T3 FoTF did work. I was 8 life before I stabalized (he was at 17) I ended the game with a reckoner, YP$, 2 tokens and 2 phoenixes in play 2-1.

Tourney: 2-0

After notes: He was very bitter, complaining how he should win that matchup etc and how he kept drawing lands. It just seemed like he kept drawing lands because I killed 11 of his creatures.

R3 Jamie on Naya Control:

G1 (play): Nut draw with Pyrewild onto cackler on turn 3. 1-0

SB: +4 Reckoner, +2 Fanatic, +1 Stormbreath, +2 Mizzium, +2 Chain
-8 1-drops, -2 YP$, -1 Shock

G2 (draw): Took a FoM line hitting him for 6. Win with Phoenix into Stormbreath. 2-0

Tourney: 3-0

After thoughts: Burn is really nice in this matchup. Post board their anger becomes weaker because it only hits Ash Zealot. I usually would never play a Phoenix unless I had a shock to kill it in response.

R4 Clint on Esper:

G1 (play): Nut draw.

SB:
+3 Skullcrack, +2 mizzium, +1 stormbreath
-3 YP$, -1 FotF, -2 Chain

G2 (draw): Apply a lot of early pressure, I noticed he is using Azorious charm to dig for double white so I committed to board. I have had a Mortars in my hand since opening 7. He plays Jace on his t4 and +1. I have cackler, zealot and phoenix on board and he was at 7. I choose to swing at him for 3 putting him at 4. I knew if I did this play, he would be forced to use jace to dig for either second white source/verdict (i assumed he had verdict and no second white, turns out he had neither). He -2 Jace to reveal 2 Blood Barons, and 1 Sphinx. I give him the piles of 2 BBV and 1 Sphinx. He takes the BBVs, on the inside I jump for joy. So he casts BBV with 1 mana open. I untap, mortars his BBV and swing in for letahl 6.

Tourney: 4-0

After thoughts: This was a bye. Match took 15 minutes.

R5 and R6: ID into top 8. Entering R6 I was the #1 seed.

After R6 I end up being 5th seed. 4-0-2

We were able to see decklists before
each round of Top 8.... and WOW it's so helpful.

R1 Top 8 Mark on GW Aggro:

G1 (draw): I play the tighest game of magic I have ever played, was able to play turn 5 chandra, and keep her protected for 6 more turns. Eventually +0 into another Chandra, end up winning the game with 2 Phoenixs. 1-0

SB I watch him SB before I even look at my own. I knew he was bringing in 5 cards, I assumed to be +3 Courage, +2 Trostani. I was right): +4 Reckoner, +2 Mizzium, +2 Chained, +3 Skullcrack,
-8 1-drops, -1 Chandra, -1 Pyrewild, -1 Shock

G2 (draw): He gets stuck on lands and I just nut draw. 2-0

Tourney: 5-0-2

After notes: I just simply outplayed my opponent. Chandra fucking got there.

Top 4 was seeds 5-8.

R2 Top 8 My friend Alex playing Jund (he beat me 4-1 in playtesting the night before. His curve is DRS - Ooze - Caratid - Demon - Cerberus.. WIth Whip and Bow of Nylea). We rode together, sucks we had to play each other but we were glad it was top4 and we both got playmats. Figure if one
of had to lose it wouldn't be bad to each other.

G1 (play): Mull to 5, keep 1 mountain, Satyr, cackler, shock, lightning strike.
T1: land, Cackler
T2: Draw temple, scry 1 to notice ash zealot. Play Satyr.
T3: Play ash zealot.
T4: top deck ash zealot.
draw lands and to play burn spells.

SB: Side in 13 cards. +4 Reckoner, +2 FoM, +2 Chain, +2 Mizzium, +2 Skullcrack, +1 Stormbreath
-8 1-drops. -2 YP$ (I knew had Golgari Charms), -1 FoTF, -2 Jet

G2 (draw): Reckoner into FoM, he then kills my guys and eat the to grow ooze to 5/5. Eventually chained the ooze, and win with 3 YP$ tokens. Burn was essential in this match.

Tourney: 6-0-2

After notes: Felt good to beat him especially after the abysmal playtesting. His deck performed great all day, he beat Mono U twice, only losing once to Mono B.

Finals some guy playing Mono B: He didn't want the IQ invite, so we just decided to split prizes. $125, 12 packs (cracked whip, bident, and foil ashiok) and got the
invite!
