That's how I'd build Kuroda if I'd finally drop those maindeck Angers.
Damn I'm just fucking dumb sometimes.

Just won FNM with this running a plains. Didn't lose a game.

Might swap Mortars and chains in main since mono blue will be popular

Good Job at FNM JS!

I must ask, why do you bring in Chained to the Rocks vs U/W/r control? You said yoo chain his Reckoner but thats only good if he gets Reckoner. If you keep Reckoner in instead, its good regardless if he has Reckoner or not.

Maybe I'm missing something, could you fill me in?

I am gonna run this tonight at FNM and tomorrow at a TCG 5k in Providence, RI.
He has a bunch of ways of embarassing my reckoners, but it's one of his only ways to stabilize. I think it's correct.

I suggested that in PyroRed already. Could be additional tempo-removal for the deck.

It would probably be fine. I did overload mortars a few times though.

How's the evolution of this deck going? Anything major, or just slight tweeks? Would adding a couple "value" nykthos in the muta slots be good or is that reaching?

Thanks in advance for replies.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

FNM Report!

Postby NerdBoyWonder » Sat Oct 19, 2013 8:57 am

[deck]Creatures 23
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Firedrink Satyr
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Chandra's Phoenix
3 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalkers 2
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

Artifacts 1
1 Hammer of Purphoros

Instants & Sorceries 10
4 Lightning Strike
4 Boros Charm
2 Mizzium Motors

Land 24
15 Mountain
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
1 Mutavault

Sideboard
4 Frostborn Weird
4 Chained to Rocks
2 Burning Earth
2 Wear//Tear
2 Shock
1 Assemble the Legion[/deck]

Game 1 - VS GB control 2-0
Match 1: curved put but never hit a Chandra or Stormbreath. Hammer came down. Took over the game. He played Desecration demon but Rakdos Cackler got sacced and swung with 2x Golem tokens & Phoenix for the match.
Match 2: boarded in 4x Chain to Rocks. Took out 2x Satyrs & 2x Mizziums. Deck decided to give me triple land triple Phoenix and Ashley. Drew into Lightning Strike, mutavault &
amp; Boros charm. Game was over quick.

Game 2 R/G Monsters 1-2
Match 1 - curved for a win.
Match 2 - took out one drops and hammer. Boarded in 4x Chain to Rocks, 4x frostborn weirds & Assemble the Legion. He curved and combat tricks for game. He fought through two Reckoners.
Match 3 - mulliganed down to 6. Had 3 land and he had full on mana engine and was able to overload motors for the win. Never been able to beat him but this was the first time I got really close. He is one of the few players that respects RDW based decks and was afraid to face me after he saw my match with his friend in the previous round.

Game 3: Devotion Something Red 2-1
Match 1: I'm on the play. He misplays and opens up with a turn 1 mutavault. He swings turn 2 and I bolt it. Sets him back 2 turns. He lands reckoner too late. I take over the board with Ashley, Phoenix, mutavault and a Reckoner with a Lightning Strike in hand. He blocks reckoner but I do the math and redirect damage to him and lightning
strike for lethal.
Match 2: board out 8x one drops and 1 hammer. Board in 2x Shocks, 4x Frostborn, 3x Chained. Lose due to never seeing a 3rd land to drop double Reck Daddies.
Match 3: keep board and just out play him. He starts off strong but leverage my burn to remove his Ashleys. He Drops phoenix. I counter with reckoner, my own Ashley and Frostborn. I remove his Phoenix and mutavault and turn his 6 point life lead to nothing.

Game 4: Event deck 2-0
Buddy of mine played an event deck. He is pretty big on homebrews and sticking to Vorthos based themes. He once yelled at me for playing Keldon Mauraders in my Modern Goblin deck because he wasn't a goblin. Very one sided match but jokes and fun.

Got second tonight and overall the deck does what I want it to and it's amazing. Didn't face Esper at all today and the one guy playing broke even losing to a weird R/b aggro deck using Purphoros & to the R/G Monsters deck. Lots of aggro in the room tonight but I'm the only one that is
playing red NOT using Purphoros and USING Firedrink Satyr. Boros charm and is unexpected by everyone around here.

For game day I plan on upping my mutavault count by one. I am still going to keep the one of hammer as it has been nothing but solid for me. I also need to fit in 2 more Mizziums in the side. Also felt at times the deck could have benefitted from Magma Jets for the scrying but there is no possible way to even fit it in. Another card I am eyeing is Glare of Heresay as my local meta is not filled with too many god weapons or enchantments other than the 2 Esper players. Also would give me another answer to Elspeth.

All in all this is THE deck I have been looking for. A solid, fast, aggressive deck with impactful cards every turn. Got a Rampager and a pack of cards. Pulled a Xenagos. Gave the FNM Rampager to my buddy playing the event deck since he is always letting me, my bro, and other friend borrow cards.

I went 3-1 at FNM using Sullivan's list. I lost only to my playtest buddy's B/W deck - major flood in Game 3, but I also suspect a few missed opportunities due the tapped lands. Otherwise I 2-0'd every match.

I like the deck...but I still feel like it's missing something. I'm attending Game Day today, but I'm going to run Mono Red Dragons instead.

I found the white splash to be extremely valuable in providing options. Boros Charm is such a beating. Dropping the white adds room in the side for Fire, Lightning and Threatens though.

Lost in the finals at gameday number 1. Didn't drop a game all night, then multiple mulligans, mana-screw and manaflood decided to rear their ugly heads in the finals. Fuck. Report tomorrow.

Is there prize support for second? If yes, who cares. All that matters is doing well, you can't worry about variance if you're deck is well constructed.

Went to the TCG Diamond 5k at Providence with this deck.

167 players, which is smaller than usually but I got 12th place going 7-2.

Will type up a tournament report soon. aka tomorrow morning.

Few quick things:

Played in a sea of B/x midrange, Chained was my MVP without a doubt.

I honestly think I want to be on the Burning Tree plan.. Just felt like my deck was kinda slow and had too many hands without any action till turn 3. Stormbreath was ok but against Doom Blades and Desc Demons, he could have been better. I really miss Thundermaws tapping ability.

Yeah I've gone lower and faster against all the doom blade decks as well. This is a great deck against a more midrange meta though.

Midrange green, not midrange black sorry. I tend to lump mono black control, dega, bw and br together as "doom blade plus desecration demon control" decks.

Ok so here is the tournament report for TCG 5k Diamond Event Providence, 167 players.

7-2 record, 12th place

Heres the deck
[deck]Creatures (24)
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalkers (2)
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

Spells (9)
2 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Strike
2 Mizzium Mortars
1 Chained to the Rocks

Lands (25)
12 Mountain
1 Plains
4 Mutavault
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph

Sideboard (15)
3 Frostburn Weird
3 Chained to the Rocks
2 Boros Charm
3 Shock
1 Wear // Tear
1 Last Breath
1 Mizzium Mortars
1 Assemble the Legion[/deck]

It was a long day, so most of this will be rather short as 9 rounds is a lot to remember.

Round 1 - 2-1 Win Esper Control This one came down to game 3 where Stormbreath threatening Ultimate forced him to wrath his Blood Baron away and I managed to
get more guys on the board and kill him. Boros Charm is an obvious all star here. Also Ulitmate Chandra into Lightning Strike to end the game =D

Round 2 - 0-2 Loss vs B/W Midrange So turns out Soilder of Pantheon is pretty good against 2x Cackler and no removal... 2 Demons and Obzedat close the game out for him quickly. Game 2 was a bit closer but he had 2 Demons again and Whip and the lifelink was just too much..

Round 3 - 2-1 Win vs Junk Midrange
Game 1 I had a nice fast start and a very timely Mortors on his Smiter sealed the deal quickly. Game 2 I could barely get any pressure against his early removal and died to some big threat. Game 3 a Monstrous Stormbreath killed him from 9!

Round 4 2-1 Win vs Jund Midrange I actually lost game 1 by flooding sooo bad and the kid was bragging to his friend how he had such a good matchup. Yea ok, Trounced him game 2 with a timely Chained on his Polukcranos. Game 3 he
keeps a Anger hand but 2 land and cant hit his 3rd for Anger and just dies...

Round 5 2-0 Win vs White Weenie A true gift from the magic gods....so yea red doesnt lose to white weenie. Enough said.

Round 6 2-0 Win vs W/B Midrange Got some revenge on W/B Midrange as I got multiple Chained both games on Demons and that was that.

Round 7 0-2 Loss vs MonoBlack Devotion/Control This was a really good deck. Fruststrating loss. At one point I had him to 1 life with just a Nightviel Spectre out. I had Dragon, Reckoner, Cackler. I swing out and he Downfalls my Dragon, Doom Blades Reckoner and blocks Cackler.....sigh

Round 8 2-1 Win vs Esper Control Hooray, another Esper deck. I smash out game 1 easily. Game 2 I mull into a slow hand and he gets me. Game 3 he stupidly keeps a hand with no blue source and doesnt hit it....dies quickly. Made me sacrifice a guy, I sac Pheonix, Boros charm
him EOT and then cast it for lethal.

Round 9 2-0 Win vs MonoBlack Devotion I had a nice fast one game 1 and he didn't have Demon! Game 2 he does get Demon which I chain. Then he gets Necromancer down. I chain it, swing and lightning Strike ftw.

Overall, the deck was strong but I felt I could have done even better with a faster, hyper-aggresive build. All in Boros woulda been really friggen good. I barely played against any early creatures.

Oh forgot to add, MVP was hands down, Chained to the Rocks. Never had it bounced or destroyed and it was so good against whip and Demon and even got Obzedat with one.

Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to give Mono Red a 1 mana terminate? Seriously, the card is pretty busted. If not for the significant deck building restrictions it placed on you...wow.

@ Zem
Y1000 for Second. Could be worse, but just disappointed to come that close and blow it. I want a play mat. I agree with you that this deck is better vs a midrange meta. Also good against non-black control.

@ Helios
Thanks. Nerd Boy Wonder deserves the credit though.

@ Dpaine
Congrats man. How was last breath / 2x Boros Charm.

Ok, so here's my report:

Game Day #1

[deck]Creatures (24)
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalkers (2)
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

Spells (9)
3 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Strike
2 Mizzium Mortars

Lands (25)
13 Mountain
4 Mutavault
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph

Sideboard (15)
1 Assemble the Legion
2 Burning Earth
4 Chained to
the Rocks
2 Mizzium Mortars
3 Shock
1 Boros Charm
2 Wear // Tear[/deck]

GameDay #1 was 13 players. We played three rounds then cut to Top 4.

Round 1: VS Mono-Black Devotion

G1: On the draw. I keep 7, he keeps 6. Just stomped. Not close.

G2: OUT: 4 Lightning Strike, IN: 4 Chained to the Rocks
On the draw. I keep 7, he keeps 6. Just stomped again.

1-0-0

Round 2: VS W/r Aggro

G1: On the play. I keep 7, he mulls to 4. You can guess how that went.

G2: OUT: 4 Rakdos Cackler, 4 Firedrinker Satyr, IN: 4 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars, 2 Shock
On the draw. We both keep 6. He has 3x Soldier of the Pantheon. I have shock + 2 [card]Ash Zealot[/
card].

2-0-0

Round 3: ID

2-0-1

Top 4: VS U/W control

G1: On the play. I keep 6, he keeps 7. He hits me with 2x Last Breath, but I ride a dragon protected with Boros Charm for the win.

G2: 2Mizzium Mortars IN: 1 Assemble the Legion, 1 Boros Charm.
Slow start, but T5 Assemble > T6 Dragon > T7 Dragon > T8 Dragon does things.

3-0-1

Finals: VS Devotion Red ( Guy is not a regular at our LGS. I'm usually the only redbro)

G1: On the play. I mull to 5 and end up keeping Mutavault, Mountain, Mizzium Mortars, Ash Zealot, Rackdos Cackler. I never draw another land.

G2: OUT: 4 [card:
35lmxkox]Rakdos Cackler,[/card] 4 Firedrinker Satyr, 1 Stormbreath Dragon, IN: 4 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars, 3 Shock.

I keep a hand of Mountain, Mountain, Temple of Triumph, Mutavault, Mizzium Mortars, shock, ash zealot. I Draw a T5 Shock and a turn 9 Phoenix. Everything else was land. He just walls thins up with a bunch of Reckoners / Frostburn weirds then 2x Mogis on T8 (for 7) +T9 (for 9).

3-1-1.

I decided that I needed to change the SB to shore up the Aggro match over the control match, since the Control Match is really good anyway. I updated to
this:

Game Day #2

Game Day #2 was about 25 players, and not at my LGS

[deck]Creatures (24)
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalkers (2)
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

Spells (9)
3 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Strike
2 Mizzium Mortars

Lands (25)
13 Mountain
4 Mutavault
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph

Sideboard (15)
4 Frostburn Weirds
4 Chained to the Rocks
2 Mizzium Mortars
3 Shock
2 Wear // Tear[/deck]

Round 1: VS G/B midrange

G1: On the draw. I both kept 7. Lightning Strike his mutavaults for all the value. Not close.

G2: OUT: 4 Lightning Strike, IN: 4 Chained to the Rocks
On the draw. I both keep 7. Guy is a new player. Just stomped.

1-0-0

[
u]Round 2:[/u] VS Devo Red

G1: On the play. I mulligan to 5 after drawing a no land and then a mutavault only hand. He keeps 7, and just crushes me.

G2: OUT: 4 Rakdos Cackler, 4 Firedrinker Satyr, 3 Boros Charm, 2Chandra, Pyromaster IN:4 Frostburn Weird, 4 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars, 3 Shock

We both mulligan to 6. I wall things up, then fly over the top. He still knocked me down to 10.

G3: No changes. On the draw. I mull to 6, he keeps 7. Very close back and forth game that came down to top decks and he gets me.

1-1-0

Round 3: VS Dega midrange

G1: On the play. We both kept 7. He floods, I curve out.

G2: OUT: 4 [card]Lightning Strike[/
card], IN: 4 Chained to the Rocks
On the draw. I keep 5, he keeps 7. I draw answers for everything he casts with Chained to the Rocks and Mizzium Mortars and just get him.

2-1-0

Round 4: VS Dega midrange

G1: On the play. We both kept 7. He floods, I curve out and get him.

G2: OUT: 4 Lightning Strike, IN: 4 Chained to the Rocks
On the draw. I keep 6, he keeps 7. I get him to 1 life then he stabilizes with Blood Baron and [card]Warleader's Helix[/card] > Obzedat.

G3: No changes. 2x Last Breaths + all the removal while I stick on three lands (that I started with in my hand). He eventually gets 2x Obzedats + Whip + Baron to my 3x Dragons and bleeds me out with the last Obzedat trigger. I fell 1 damage short.

2-2-0
n
Round 5: VS R/b Aggro (forum member Solemn10)

G1: On the play. I mulligan to 6. He keeps 7, and just stomps me.

G2: OUT: 4 Rakdos Cackler, 4 Firedrinker Satyr, 3 Boros Charm, 2Chandra, Pyromaster IN:4 Frostburn Weird, 4 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars, 3 Shock

On the play. We both keep 7. Wall up, fly over the top.

G3: No changes. We both keep 7. I we both wall up, I stick on 4 land, he hits 5 (with his 23 land deck) and dragon's me.

2-3-0 (for 12th)

Thoughts:

(1) I was frustrated, but I'm over it now. All the games I lost were when I had mana issues (usually screwing, but also flooding). It would be easy to throw my hands up in the air and say
bad luck, variance etc. However, I think this actually reflects a problem with the deck. The deck has consistency issues. If we can solve them, we'll basically never lose. I think it's time to bring in magma jets to smooth our draws. I'm open to opinions on how to shoehorn them in. I'm thinking we either:

A) Straight swap for Lightning Strike. While I think Lightning Strike is better in a vacuum, there are only five creatures that Lightning Strike is worse than Magma jet against (Kalonian Tusker, Boros Reckoner, Nightveil Specter, Fleecemane Lion, Omenspeaker). I think we really need the scry.

B) Cut some cards. Something like this:

[deck]Creatures (24)
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4
Chandra's Phoenix
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalkers (2)
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

Spells (10)
2 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet

Lands (24)
12 Mountain
3 Mutavault
1 Plains
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph

Sideboard (15)
4 Frostburn Weirds
4 Chained to the Rocks
4 Mizzium Mortars
2 Wear // Tear
1 Boros Charm [/deck]

(2) The Mono-Red match up should be favourable in theory, but always seems to go wrong. Ideas for making it better? Or should I just accept it as variance? Opinions?

(3) The deck is very strong. If you draw lands and spells, you crush.

Theros Match/win ratio goes to 21-6-1 (75%).

Thanks for reading, all feedback appreciated.

@ Zeman, yup you bet. Actually my very last win of the day. I had 3 mana. Chained the guys Xanrid Necromancer, swung him down to 3. Hes like Ok Done? Nope, LIghtning Strike you. Hes like wtf you have mana for that?

@ Johnny - Last Breath was merely in there as I expected Master of Waves to be everywhere. I wanted 5 answers for him. Of course, I never saw it.

G1: On the play. I keep 6, he keeps 7. He hits me with 2x Last Breath, but I ride a dragon protected with Boros Charm for the win.
.
I am probably misunderstanding this statement, but doesn't stormbreath dragons pro white keep Boros Charm from working with it?

You couldn't give it Double Strike but the "Permanants are indestructable" clause does not target him and is fine.

I honestly think I want to be on the Burning Tree plan.. Just felt like my deck was kinda slow and had too many hands without any action till turn 3. Stormbreath was ok but against Doom Blades and Desc Demons, he could have been better. I really miss Thundermaws tapping ability.
Congrats, dpaine.

But just to clarify, the deck is made to actually go into the late game. The 3-4 Boros Charms are in the maindeck in order to blank Doom Blades and Supreme Verdicts. The deck is fortunate enough to have somewhat of a window to go underneath an opponent with the 8x1-Drops, but the deck is made to go long so it can safely finish with a Dragon.

I reached the same conclusion at the end of FNM. I wasn't salty about going 3-1 (it's hard to be salty when your only loss is to your good friend), but I knew by the time I got home that I wasn't taking R/w Aggro to Game Day. I really missed Magma
Jet, not just for the Scry ability, but for the ability to shoot down my opponent's early critters - something Boros Charm can't do.

I was also having a smidgeon of trouble with my sideboard because, for once, I had way too many options. My head was going crazy. So I went with the Mono Red version of the deck, since it was capable of doing what I needed it to do.

[deck=Khaos's Game Day Deck]
Creatures 24
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Planeswalker 2
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

Burn 9
2 Mizzium Mortars
3 Magma Jet
4 Lightning Strike

Land 25
3 Mutavault
22 Mountain

Sideboard 15
3 Skullcrack
2 Burning Earth
2 Flames of the Firebrand
2 Frostburn Weird
2 Traitorous Instinct
2 Shock
2 Mizzium Mortars
[/deck]

It went 3-1 at Game Day. I lost to the eventual winner, a cocky and annoying G/W Aggro (the Flash/tokens variant) player. In our match during Game 1, he hit the nutdraw
while on the play and I just died. In Game 2 I stuck to the "anti-green" plan and simply outplayed him. In Game 3, after stealing his Wurm token with Traitrous Instinct, I had him in my sights. I was going to swing for exactly lethal. My guys turned sideways, my opponent looked confused, then dejected. Then the DURP came. My opponent says,"Wait-a-minute! Can't I just make a 2/2 with Selesnya Charm to make a blocker and not die!? Yeah! I'll do that!"

Yes, Virginia, you can make a blocker.

I died the following turn on the crackback.

Despite losing to guy, I'm still happy with the deck. I'll be making some tweaks to the board, obviously, but I like where I stand.

The sideboard packages are what I like the best about the deck. I actually feel like i have everything I need, although I'd like to be able to fit Peak Eruption into the 75.

nBut anyways, I'm rambling. The Magma Jet was such a lifesaver in some games. I really think that was one of the little things the deck felt like it was missing.

In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.

Oh yeah, deck us definitely designed to go to the late game and I won many games going late.

I just think I would have been better positioned with a faster deck rather than going long.

Stormbreath just died right away so often and not tapping Demon like thundermaw does make a difference.

+1 :D

I'm thinking the 24 land plan. With the jets and scary lands we should be able to stack the deck as we need.

EDIT: I love autocorrect...

i agree with khaos here.

i played many games with the red/white variant on cockatrice now, and i really think that i often get color screwed, or get slowed down 1 turn by tapped lands and so on.... im really not liking how it works out currently and i think i will switch back to mono red too. and wait for good rakdos cards to play dos rakis again :D

I still like 25 land personally, even with 4 Jets. I'm not sure the deck needs Reckoners and Weirds against other Red decks either;I think your experience probably just variance Johnny. Overall I think the deck is solid, runs really well and allows quite a lot of room for individual card choices (especially in the S/B) based on local metas and personal preference.

My current set up looks like this -

[deck]

Land
4 Mutavault
12 Mountain
1 Plains
4 Temple Of Triumph
4 Sacred Foundry

Creatures
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Ash Zealot
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Spells
4 Magma Jet
4 Lightning Strike
2 Chained To The Rocks
2 Boros Charm

Thighs
3 Chandra, Best Card In Standard

S/B
4 Boros Reckoner
2 Chained To The Rocks
3
Mizzium Mortars
2 Wear/Tear
2 Assemble The Legion
2 Flex Slots
[/deck]
I play with the Dragons for fun at the moment cos I have 4 of them and it's straight up fun to cast Dragons :) My go to Red deck of choice is still PyroRed as I think it is better positioned overall against the current meta on MTGO - lots of Mono B still.

Ok, took a little longer to write something (lots of study work). I won't post the original decklist I used 2 weeks ago, instead I am gonna post what I took to Gameday (40 people) this Saturday.

As I said before, I am not running 1drops at all. My list is in fact very similar to what LaZerBurn posted (even with the weird one of, in my case, Aurelia). Anyway, decklist and short write-up follows.

[deck]
Creatures (17)
4 Ash Zealot
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Stormbreath Dragon
1 Aurelia, The Warleader

Spells (15)
3 Shock
4 Magma Jet
3 Lightning Strike
1 Mizzium Mortars
2 Warleader's Helix
2 Chained to the Rocks

My 2nd true love (3)
3 Chandra, Pyromaster

Lands (25)
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
2 Boros Guildgate
2 Mutavault
1 Plains
12 Mountain

Sideboard
1 Shock
1 Mizzium Mortars
2 Chained to the Rocks
1 Hammer of Purphoros
3 Anger of the Gods
1 Assemble the Legion
2
Pithing Needle
2 Ratchet Bomb
2 Wear // Tear
[/deck]

R1 2-1 Rostislav with (Fanatic) Devotion Red - I had serious troubles going into this round. I printed my decklist at home, but I hadn't really gotten the deck together since the last tourney a week and a half ago (I tested on MTGO). So I had cards everywhere - sleeved, unsleeved, in different boxes etc. Spent the last minutes getting it all together, but didn't finish in time. So the first few minutes of the match I still was getting my deck together. I was fully expecting my opp to call a judge and issue me a game loss (not really a good start for the day). He was kind enough though to let me finish, so I let him go firstn and also promised to show him what I will be boarding in as I thought that would be fair.

Games were kinda quick - I got overrun the first game, he got stuck on two lands the second and had mana flood the third. We had a little talk about me boarding in Chained since I was afraid if he had [card:
14nqoghh]Peak Eruption[/card] to walk into a blowout, but it turned out he wasn't playing them.

Was an awesome fella though, we had a good talk afterwards and I pointed him to this forum since he knew MTGS and was a red mage too.

SB: Mortars, Shock, Anger. Took out some dragons, Aurelia, one land and Magma Jet(s) I think (since I wanted my removal to be either effective or low cost)

R2 2-1 Tomáš (Thomas for englishmen) with (Fanatic) Devotion Red - a friend of mine from Monday drafts. Red mage too. Was kinda bummed having to play him right in the secound round. He didn't have all the cards (was missing 4th Fanatic and 2 Phoenixes). He stomped me game one, but boarding in all the removal kept him on the leash the second and third games. Anger really pulled it's weight here.

SB: Same as before together with Chained.

R3 2-1 Jan with Selesnya Angel/no Voice - first non-red mage, so we haven't had as much talk going into the match. He
made a mistake the first game: I pinged his Angel with Chandra, he says ok. I go full frontal with 2 Phoenixes and a Dragon, he wants to block, I kindly say that he cannot and point out that Chandra prevents this. He looks at her, reads her and sighs - I ask whether he had Brave/Gods Willing... he says yes. Second game I have him lethal next turn with myself standing at 15 life, only to be killed by Advent EOT with Ajani + Selesnya Charm on his turn for exactsies. Didn't think of that. Third game I am trying to play around possible protection and I manage to kill his Ooze with Mortars, exile his Angel, but totally forget about the Wurm that is already in play (he used a dice for it instead of a card, so I lost track of it). I am really nervous when he swings back for 6 to get me to 14, since I don't have lethal on board. Luckily for me, he doesn't have Charm nor Ajani in hand - he draws into Ajani next turn, but that's not enough.

Him being stranded on 2 green really helped there.

SB: Chained,
Mortars, Ratchet Bombs. Out went Shocks and possibly Zealots? Don't really remember.

R4 - 0-2 Mikuláš (Mikulas) with Naya - I was really tired after the last match, we were the last ones to finish and I had no time to go to bathrom, have a smoke or call my GF since the morning. As I am 3-0 I really don't care if I lose or win, I just want it over quick (I am confident I can cover the loss in the next round). I keep a Plains, Mutavault hand after mull to 6, which was a terrible decision... so first game ends quickly. Second one takes longer, but I think I wasn't playing even mediocre game, blasted the wrong targets and eventually got overrun with the big monsters.

3-1 and really happy that I have some time to breath now. I call my GF, have a little snack while reading a chapter from the last book of Diablo: The Sin War trilogy and even manage to defeat the Hydra challenge deck. Lucked out a little bit, but Aurelia managed to crush many hydra heads on her own.

SB: Mortars
and Chained in, Shocks out. Maybe even boarded Anger, which was surely a mistake (I saw him run Experiment One G1, but that would he his only 1drop).

R5 - 2-0 Jaroslav with Esper - once I see his colors, I ease up greatly. This match is almost a bye. He even gets stuck on 3 lands for two turns the first game... I board in Needles, Assemble, Wear and Hammer. My Zealots gets destroyed and he was greatly surprised that I didn't play anything on my fifth turn (just Temple). He even goes "Untap...?" "Upkeep...?" "Draw...?" I tell him to go ahead with a smile. I had a Dragon, Chandra and Needle in hand, didn't want to run Chandra into Downfall, I was hoping he would tap out for a Planeswalker, which he did. Jace gets Needled, Chandra goes online. I draw Assemble the next turn and he just gets overrun with me attacking from so many different angles.

SB: Out goes Reckoners, Chained and Mortars... I don't have enough cards to get in (didn't want to
board in Bombs, god knows why), so I left some Reckoners in.

R6 + quarterfinals - 2-1 Michal with (Fanatic) Devotion Red - father of the little fella from R4. We ID since there are 8 people with 12 points, so the TOP8 is locked. I get paired against him in TOP8, which makes sense, since all the tables drew. I kill everything in sight the first game, while in the second I keep a risky onelander and he makes short work of me (that's to be expected). Third game I Anger the whole table (2 Emmisaries, Firefist, Satyr) just before Fanatic hits. It's a sweet ride from there.

Since this tournament was part of a larger series (10 tournies in different formats), I was really interested if I had enough points to grab TOP16... since these guys get a final draft for free with TOP8 of that draft having another one. Since I now had enough points to advance, I was already half way out (we had a plan for the evening and I was late even going into TOP8). That showed greatly on semifinals.

[
b]Semifinals - 0-2 Petr with MonoU[/b] - apparently one of the known guys in czech MTG community, which wasn't really a good sign, since after 10 years of absence from the game I dont't really get along with their attitude and their language. Had the usual "yeah, good, great matchup for me" and had whole fanclub of little teens right behind him. Oh well. G1 he do not manage to draw into Thassa, which gives me an opening.

He - 18. I swing with 2 Dragons, since he has no air blockers and only 8 power in the game with me being on 9. He leaves a Familiar to block, which proves fatal for me. I draw into the seventh land, but totally forget about my dragon's protection from white and scoop. I just said to myself that he had a blocker. Oh well.

I board pretty terribly - in goes the removal suite, out goes Phoenixes (what the hell was I thinking?) and in goes Anger. Well, turns out Anger doesn't really do anything for me here. What bothers me is Thassa's unblockability. Needles
would be better, but even they don't really do much work. I make some pretty terrible misplays (like using both Bombs to get rid of one master) and lose accordingly. Next time I'll just board in Mortars, Chained (which is an allstar there) and Bombs but that's about it.

I don't really care though, since I got 20 boosters and with a little luck (this was 9th tournament of the series) I locked a place in the final draft. I am little bit pissed at the first game, but I wasn't interested in the second.

We opened about 8 of the boosters and we already cracked a Dragon and Thoughtseize. Kept them in package though so we can use for a home draft, which will be my first. Looking forward to it

For the deck: I can't really be happier but even then it needs some tuning. Magma Jet makes it click. It allows you to keep relatively awkward two landers with it's ability (albeit even then relying on probabilities/luck) to dig for more lands. The SB still needs work and even more
my SB strategy. Manabase is still not really solved, the Plains are probably useless, even a third guildgate would do better. The burn suite may use some reworking - can cut a shock for more Mortars. As for Boros Charm: since I am not operating with one drops, the Charm loses some of it's power. There aren't really that many times when I can reliably protect a Dragon with it. At least that's my reasoning for not putting it in, since I imagine that with an array of one drops Charm would find it's use essentially every game.

I also really need to get two foods with me next time since I am goddamn lazy to get something from McDonalds or Chinese.

Oh and I just 3-0 (Orzhov midrange, Orzhov aggro-midrange and MonoB) a daily with the same deck, just +1 Mortars SB -1 Shock SB +1 Mortars MB (yeah, 61 cards, was pretty pissed at myself unable to submit deck with 60 cards after the first game :D ).
Got a bye first round, hence 3-0.

--TLDR--

The big version without one drops works fine, at least for me. And sorry for the long read, as a master's student of sociology and psychology, I am not really used to keeping it on low word count. :)
