I'm not really too fond of the double black cost though. I'm being ambitious on my mana as it is.

[deck]BR Control-ish[/deck]

Not enough black sources? Not enough reach? I know something is missing here but I'm stumped.
Really tempted to run [card]Toil // Trouble[/card] in place of Read the Bones.

We'll see how it goes in testing. The choice is whether to have the power of scry-draw or a late game finisher.

^ same here.

It becomes a question of 'did I get my 1 in 2 draw with a BTE? If no, I'm a huge dog because I diluted my card quality to make my nutdraws better'.

And I don't like that at all.

Eh, I don't personally hate her. In trade of being a less efficient creature in comparison to cards like Ash Zealot, she makes good use of first few manas in a match. There are games where it ends up being interactions like "Player A: Creature" "Player B: Bolt it", and it's great to have something that turns that around.

I played BTE decks and non-BTE decks and much preferred the latter. Every time I played a BTE deck I felt like I was going to Vegas.

That said, I can respect what she does.

What do we think of this SCG article's Big Boros?

[deck]4 Boros Reckoner
3 Frostburn Weird
3 Stormbreath Dragon
Planeswalkers (7)

4 Chandra, Pyromaster
3 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
Lands (26)

13 Mountain
4 Plains
1 Boros Guildgate
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
Spells (17)

3 Chained to the Rocks
4 Lightning Strike
2 Shock
3 Warleader's Helix
4 Anger of the Gods
1 Mizzium Mortars

Sideboard
4 Burning Earth
2 Wear
1 Heliod, God of the Sun
3 Glare of Heresy
2 Mizzium Mortars
3 Peak Eruption
[/deck]

In this type of deck, Espleth seems perfect.

Not a huge fan of Helix since it misses on Blood Baron and Dragon.

Wouldn't mind -1 Espleth, -1 Anger for +1 Frostburn and +1 Dragon.

I also really like Magma Jet over Shock, especially in this deck.

I don't understand why you'd need Anger in this archetype honestly.

You think with all the burn the effect is overrated?

That aside, the one thing I really do want from this list I think is Espleth.

Here's the reason why I hate BTE:

It keeps drawing me into builds like this -

4 Firecrotch Satyr
4 Rakdos Cacklover
4 Burning-Pee Emission
4 Firefister Striker
3 Young Pyromancer
4 Chandra's Phoenix
3 Fanatic of Mogis

1 Hammer of Puu-Puu Platter

4 Shocker
4 Smegma Jet
4 Lightning Strike

3 Mutavault
18 Mountain

3 Chandra, Thighmaster
3 Burning Earf
4 Mizzium Mortars
3 Act of Reason
2 Electrickery

The deck is synergistic, yes. But it's so all-in. My brain keeps telling me, "It's all the best cards!"

But the problem is, half the deck fucking blows when you're in topdeck mode. I start moving on to Ash Zealot builds and I keep getting sucked in by the Gruul cunt.

I'm pretty drunk and venting, but for the last month, something has been nagging at me about that card. I just figured it out tonight. I just don't like it.

But the thing is, for lack of a better deck, I'll
probably end up playing something like this, at least for the coming FNM. And it makes Ash Zealot a sad panda.

Hedging, for now. Fury + Reckoner allows another way to deal with Desecration Demon, Blood Baron, and any other 4-6 toughness creatures that would otherwise take over the game. By the same logic, you can channel Fury through Reckoner to hit a planeswalker It's a 2-for-1 for them if they don't have anything else on the field for you to kill, but in most cases you can get parity if not relative card advantage.

For those that care about the lady situation:

The lady and I have worked things out; we talked and she apologized for what happened, she talked to the guy and told him she's staying with me. I haven't talked to the guy yet but I probably won't be able to stay friends with him, at least no to the extent we were before.

Stupid combo/synergy:
Burning-tree Emissary chain + Fanatic of Mogis + [card]Legion's Initiative[/card]

Difficult to pull off with the mana required, but stupid amount of damage potential. Bonus extra mana from Emissary can be used for creatures, burn, or an overloaded Mortars.
Unfortunately, that suggestion for sorcery speed like Mortars won't work, since those creatures will be returning at the start of the combat phase to make use of the mana. Still, I guess it can still curve out from BTE > Legion &
gt; Mogis for massive damage.
Well, nuts. That part completely slipped right by me. :frown:

In that case, Zealot, Reckoner, and Phoenix are better devotion enablers for the Fanatic for the types of decks I usually prefer. As many times as I try, I just can't bring myself to drop Ash Zealot. The deck wouldn't feel right without her.

That is good to hear, Calamity. I'm glad you won't have that additional stress in your life.

You mentioned not liking to communicate by text message with her, so is video chat an option at all? Most laptops have cameras built into them, and simple cameras for desktop systems aren't that expensive. It's a richer mode of communication than text-only.

@valdarith: That 5 damage per turn potential. Still, why Hellion Crucible instead of Mutavault?

BTE or Ashley: It depends on the deck list. I still like latter, even if she sometimes slug at me for flashbacking that Faithless Looting.

I am pretty tired of testing Modern on Cockatrice, nobody there plays actual decks, they just play decks with 30 removal spells, 10 counterspells, and 20 land, it feels like. It's some of the most boring Magic I've ever had to sit through.

So while my last combo was horrible...here's one that I want to look at building around.

Fabled Hero + Madcap Skills. Two turn clock if you smash it out early.

Boros sligh?

There's Fencing Ace for a lower curve. Granted, you cannot do silly things with it like using Spark Jolt on a Fabled Hero.

I've been saying BTE is horrible since I stopped playing gruul. She forces you to not run the best red two-drop ever.

And with that said...back to working on batman jund.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.
